The Bucs will be down one receiver for the rest of training camp and the season after Bryant Mitchell suffered a torn left Achilles tendon Friday night’s preseason game against the Steelers. The injury diagnosis was first reported by Greg Auman of the Athletic.

Head coach Bruce Arians commented on the injury on Saturday afternoon.

The injury occurred with 11:34 remaining in the third quarter after Mitchell caught a four-yard pass from Ryan Griffin and was tackled. Once taken to the ground, he started grabbing his leg while he looked to be in pain, where he eventually was taken off on a cart. He ended the night with five receptions for 32 yards in the game.

Mitchell previously spent three years playing for the Edmonton Eskimos in the CFL before signing with the Arizona Cardinals in January of 2019. He then was released in May, but quickly signed with the Bucs six days later, where he had a solid training camp this summer and was in competition for the final receiver’s spot.

While the Bucs will be without Mitchell for the year, they do have a lot depth at wide receiver. With Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Breshad Perriman locked into the top three spots, the field is fairly open for the fourth and fifth string position.

Second-year player Justin Watson looks to be the favorite for the fourth wide receiver spot on the depth chart, but three-year veteran and kick returner Bobo Wilson is also in the mix. Rookies Scotty Miller, Anthony Johnson, DaMarkus Lodge, Matthew Eaton, and Spencer Schnell are in the running for the last spot as well, along with a four-year player that’s bounced around to a number of teams in K.J. Brent.

With the exception of Watson and Miller, who were picked in the fifth and sixth round of the 2018 and 2019 drafts, respectively, the rest of receivers fighting to make the roster are all undrafted free agents.
