Jameis Winston’s 30 interception season in 2019 cost him a long-term deal with the Buccaneers, despite setting numerous franchise records and even putting his name in the NFL record books.
A couple weeks ago, Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin took some responsibility for the number of interceptions that Winston threw last year, saying the receivers made mistakes that contributed to the 30 balls that ended up in opponent’s hands.

On Thursday, Godwin joined the local media on a video conference call and said he is in amazement that Winston is still in search of a new home. But also said the Covid-19 shutdown of the NFL may be contributing to Winston’s unemployment.
“Honestly I’m very surprised,” Godwin said. “I think these are weird times right now and so I think that may be part of it but I’m very surprised just because I think it’s evident that the talent is there for Jameis. And I think you’d be hard-pressed to find 32 quarterbacks better than him.
“So I’m surprised but I’m confident that he’ll land somewhere and I know that he’s a tough enough guy that he’ll be ready whenever his opportunity comes.”
Winston continues to work out and train and posts numerous times a week on social media, showing future employers that he is ready when they are. How soon that call comes will depend a lot on how quickly the country can move on from the pandemic and return to normal.
