Much of the fanfare going towards the Bucs this offseason has been over the moves they’ve made on offense. When you sign the greatest quarterback of all time in Tom Brady and trade for arguably the greatest tight end with Rob Gronkowksi, naturally it’s going to get attention.
One thing perhaps that’s been overlooked is the Bucs defense.
The Bucs’ goal at the start of free agency was to keep their top playmakers on the defensive line, which they did. Tampa Bay re-signed Jason Pierre-Paul, Ndamukong Suh, and franchised tagged NFL sack leader Shaq Barrett. It was moves like this to keep the unit intact that had Good Morning Football’s Peter Schrager recently raving about.
“I think what the Bucs did before they even signed Brady was monumental,” Schrager said. “What’d they do? Well they went out and re-signed Jason Pierre-Paul when other teams were coming, they re-signed Ndamukong Suh, who made a lot of sense last year, and then they brought back on a franchise tag deal the NFL’s leading pass rusher and sacker in Shaq Barrett.”
The Bucs defense did in fact show up towards the end of the year. In their final six games last season they allowed an average of just 235 passing yards per game nad 297.5 yards total, which were well below their season long total of 297.5 and 343.9. They continued to be dominant in stopping the run, ending up with a league best 73.8 yards per game on the season. The turnaround was mostly credited to the Bucs’ rookie corners improving, plus the return of Pierre-Paul forming one of the best pass rushing combinations in the league with him and Barrett.

Everyone will focus on the offense and yes, there's a lot to like. But, quietly, the @Buccaneers did some great work in free agency even before @TomBrady signed. JPP, Suh, and Shaq Barrett are all coming back. Lavonte David and Devin White are star LBs." —@PSchrags pic.twitter.com/tLFSBQI9Gk
