In a not so normal 2020, the strangeness continued on Tuesday. The media was allowed our first access into the Advent Health Training Center this year – albeit it socially distanced, in masks and wearing distancing devices around our neck that would set off an alarm if media members got too close to another person.

Still, it was a football field, with the aroma of fresh mowed grass in the air and music blaring across the practice fields as the Buccaneers offense, led by quarterback Tom Brady, took the field at 7:30 for a morning workout.

The media viewing area was at the south end of the field so we essentially were looking 100 yards north to see what was happening. The workout began with stretching as Brady and his fellow quarterbacks – Ryan Griffin and Blaine Gabbert – participated in the stretching drills lined up next to each other. Quarterbacks were then joined by running backs, receivers and tight ends for some warm up throws in what looked to be some goal line passing work divided into three groups.
Newly signed running back LeSean McCoy joined his teammates for the first time on Tuesday and participated in some of the drills wearing a gray hoodie in the morning heat and body-drenching humidity. Wide receiver Mike Evans was easy to spot as his imposing height and wingspan was easy to detect even from such a distance.
Just before the media viewing period ended the team began throwing some passes towards the south end zone and we saw Brady and Rob Gronkowski hook up over the middle. Brady also had a couple connections with Evans on deeper balls.

While it wasn’t much to see, the reality that Brady is the quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was confirmed for those thinking they have been dreaming since March 20. We saw it with our own eyes, even if it was from 100 yards away while wearing a mask during a pandemic.
It was strange, but better than no football at all.
