On Bruce Murray’s NFL Radio show The SiriusXM Blitz, alongside Brady Quinn, Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Montana joined the duo on Wednesday where he was asked to speculate on the struggles that Tom Brady may face as he joins the Bucs after spending the entirety of his 20-year career with the New England Patriots.
“I think that’ll the biggest adjustment – is them getting used to him,” Montana said. “I think from my understanding, is that they will give Tom a little leeway in that offense because I think he was looking for that in New England and they weren’t going to give him it.”

And Montana knows a thing or two about joining another team while on the tail end of a long and storied career.
After 14 years, seven Pro Bowl appearances, four All-Pro selections and four Super Bowl victories with San Francisco, Montana headed to Kansas City for the last two seasons of his playing career where he was able to rack up another Pro Bowl selection and two playoff appearances behind a 17-8 regular season record with the Chiefs.
As Mark Cook noted in last week’s edition of The Hook, while Montana is far from alone in his quest to win the big game with another franchise after already accruing a legendary resume, he – along with Brett Favre and Kurt Warner – ultimately fell short of a reaching a goal only accomplished by Peyton Manning. Winning a Super Bowl with two different teams.
Rivals for most of their respective careers, Brady now looks to follow in the footsteps laid by Manning as he left Indianapolis for a Super Bowl victory with Denver. And Tampa Bay, despite sitting in the midst of a 12-year playoff drought, has Super Bowl aspirations.
Montana continued.
“And so he has some input as things go forward, just taking a guess at it, and that’s why he’s there. Look at the numbers that team put up last year. It’s crazy. They got a good defense. They got some weapons on the outside and you add that tight end Gronk back into the mix, I would imagine you’ll see a lot of Gronk especially in the beginning which will settle, kind of ease that first few series with Tom. If I was playing them I would make sure I try to take Gronk out of the picture, if you can. But it’ll be fun to watch, if it happens. It’ll be fun to watch.”
