It was as dominant a performance as we have seen in a decade, and a win that proves the Buccaneers are for real in 2020. The Buccaneers played a near-perfect game following a poor first quarter, scoring 38 unanswered points after falling behind 10-0 early to Green Bay, who came in undefeated.
We could literally include almost every player that stepped onto the field in Week 6, but have narrowed down the top performers from Sunday’s big win.
DC Todd Bowles
After one quarter the Packers had a 10-0 lead and had racked up 144 yards, on pace to finish with 576 yards. Then the chess match of coaches got serious and Bowles had his checkmate wrapped up by halftime. Bowles called a super aggressive game, overwhelming the Packers offensive line that had given up just three sacks all season long before Sunday.
It was a masterpiece of a game for Bowles and his defensive staff.
LB Lavonte David
On Thursday I wrote that a win would be a statement for the organization, but also for some players personally with Lavonte David being one of those. David took advantage of the national spotlight and played an outstanding game totaling eight stops, two tackles-for-loss, two quarterback hits and 1.5 sacks.
LB Devin White
As good as David was, White might have been even a little better. After asking Bowles to unleash him in this game earlier in the week, White played like a star with the country watching. White always brings energy, but seemed to have even a little extra juice on Sunday against Green Bay. The second-year linebacker finished with 10 tackles, three for loss and a sack.
CB Jamel Dean
Dean made the play of the day and a huge momentum changer with his second quarter interception return of an Aaron Rodgers pass for a score to get the Bucs defense on track after a rough first quarter. Dean is making a case for the best defensive back on the team and could replace Sean Murphy-Bunting as CB2 sooner rather than later. Dean finished with two tackles but his INT came at the perfect time. The Packers gained less than 60 yards the rest of the afternoon and he provided that spark the defense was looking for.
CB Carlton Davis
Davis was named a Top 10 cornerback by Bruce Arians before the season and is living up to that praise six games into the year. Davis notched six tackles, good for third best on Sunday, and added four pass breakups – one of which turned into a Mike Edwards second quarter interception.
TE Rob Gronkowski
Gronkowski got his first touchdown of the season and his first since 2018 on Sunday, as we got to see the “Gronk spike” for the first time in a Bucs uniform. But it likely won’t be the last, as the Gronkowski and Tom Brady connection is starting to be rekindled over the last two games. Gronkowski led the Bucs with 78 yards on five receptions and one score.
QB Tom Brady
Brady’s numbers won’t wow too many who just scan the box score, but his 17-of-27, 166-yard, two touchdown afternoon was exactly why he was brought to Tampa Bay to replace Jameis Winston under center. His command of the offense and his efficiency to keep the chains moving was classic Brady, who couldn’t care less about numbers as long as his team wins. The Bucs did that on Sunday, and did so in a dominant fashion.
RB Ronald Jones
It took Jones nearly two full seasons to notch his first 100-yard game, but now has had three in a row after Sunday’s effort rushing 23 times for 113 yards and two scores. Jones has taken the reins as the featured back with a vengeance and seems to get better – and more confident – each week.
Honorable Mention: Offensive line (no sacks or penalties), DT Ndamukong Suh (one sack), Jason Pierre-Paul (six tackles, 1.5 sacks), K Ryan Succop (5/5 XPs, 1/1 on field goals)
