The NFL nominates three players each for the FedEx Air And Ground Players Of The Week, for those who had top performances for passing and rushing. This is Jones’ first time winning the award.
Despite fumbling on the first drive of the game against Carolina after making a reception, the coaches decided to stick with Jones and it paid huge dividends. Jones had a career high 192 rushing yards on 23 carries and a touchdown in Tampa Bay’s 46-23 win.
The highlight of his day came in the third quarter when Jones broke off a resounding 98-yard touchdown run from the Bucs’ own 2-yard line to help Tampa Bay go up 27-17 at the time. The big run tied a Bucs record for the longest touchdown scored in team history. It also gave Jones a new record as the longest rushing touchdown by a Buccaneer.
This was the fourth time that Jones has gone for over 100 yards on the season, which includes a stretch of three games in a row from Weeks 4-6. His 192-yard game also puts him tied for fifth all-time for the most single-game yards in Bucs’ history.
Jones defeated fellow running backs Nick Chubb of the Cleveland Browns and the Raiders’ Josh Jacobs to win the award.
