With two games left in the 2020 season, Tampa Bay wide receiver Mike Evans is closing in an NFL record. Evans, who has caught 57 passes for 779 yards and 11 touchdowns this season, is just 221 yards away from reaching 1,000 receiving yards for the first seventh year to start an NFL career. Evans is currently tied with Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss, his idol, with six straight 1,000-yard seasons, dating back to his rookie season in 2014.

Evans needs to average 111 yards per game in the final two weeks of the season to achieve that record. He’s had three 100-yard receiving games this year, including 110 yards on six catches last Sunday against the Falcons.

Evans, a three-time Pro Bowler, has publicly said he would rather see the Bucs win and make the playoffs rather than get the individual accolade.

“We’re very happy that we control our own destiny,” Evans said. “That’s what we want – that’s all we could ask for. We’ve got to go out and do it. We have the roster. We’ve just got to fine tune some things and get hot at the right time, and I feel like we will.”

While Evans downplayed his quest to make NFL history, Bucs head coach Bruce Arians would like to see Evans break the record.

“It’s something in my mind,” Arians said. “I have not talked to the quarterback and I don’t want the quarterbacks forcing things. But yes, it’s in my mind. When guys have a chance to – in the history of the NFL – make something happen, you want to see it happen. I would love for Mike to get that record.”
