For the first time in franchise history, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have won the ESPY award for Best Team. The Bucs were one of seven teams nominated for the award, including the following:

Stanford Cardinal, NCAA women’s basketball
Baylor Bears, NCAA men’s basketball
Alabama Crimson Tide, NCAA football
Oklahoma Sooners, NCAA softball
Seattle Storm, WNBA
Los Angeles Dodgers, MLB

Despite the formidable competition, the Bucs incredible run to the Super Bowl sealed the honor. At 7-5 entering the bye in Week 13, Tampa Bay wasn’t even guaranteed a playoff berth. But the team rattled off eight straight victories to win their second world title in franchise history. Three of those playoff victories came on the road, before returning to Raymond James Stadium to become the first NFL team to win a Super Bowl at home.

Tampa Bay became the first team to return all 22 starters after winning it all, setting themselves up for another run at the title. They’ll enter the 2021 season as the favorites to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LVI in mid-February.

The Bucs were nominated for the Best Team ESPY back in 2003 after winning their first Super Bowl, but the Los Angeles Angels won the award.

The 2021 ESPYs have come up all Bucs however, as quarterback Tom Brady won Best Male Athlete earlier in the night. At 43 years old, Brady led the Bucs to his seventh championship victory in ten appearances. Brady overcame racing driver Lewis Hamilton, Edmonton Oilers’ forward Connor McDavid and Denver Nuggets’ center Nikola Jokic for the award.
