The Bucs have waived quarterback Ryan Griffin on Tuesday morning, per Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times. Griffin was among a group of four quarterbacks with only three spots available on the 53-man roster.
The Bucs will in fact release QB Ryan Griffin today. He will be among the cuts by 4 pm. Mike Evans’ restructure to his contract to provide some cap space won’t be completed until Thursday. https://t.co/OKvd1wLeeq

With Tom Brady and Blaine Gabbert slotted in as the two top quarterbacks again for the Bucs, Griffin looked to be the odd man out after they selected Kyle Trask in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
You could say it was a competition, but the Bucs were never going to release a second round pick that they have a long term investment in as the potential successor to Brady. It didn’t help Griffin’s chances either after having a sub par performance in his first two preseason games, and the Bucs didn’t give him any snaps in the finale.
After spending two years with the Saints, the Bucs picked up Griffin off of waivers in 2015 and he’s been here ever since. This technically makes Griffin the longest tenured quarterback in team history despite playing in just two games and throwing two passes.
Some highlights for Griffin during his tenure with Tampa Bay consisted of having one of the best tandems you could find in the preseason between himself and tight end Tanner Hudson. They went on to lead the NFL in passing and receiving yards between two players in 2019.
The Bucs have 16 practice squad spots to fill after all the roster cuts and it is very likely that Griffin will take one of them if he does not sign on the 53-man roster with another team.
Griffin will always be a part of Bucs history as the man who held up an Avocado Tequila filled Brady as he stumbled making the walk from his boat to land during the Bucs’ Super Bowl LV victory parade.
