Bucs quarterback Tom Brady has thrown nine interceptions this year, but only three have been his fault. Tampa Bay’s star quarterback has been undone by the receivers around him several times this year, including three drops resulting in interceptions. But it isn’t just drops that are hurting Brady’s numbers this season. Route-running mistakes have been far too frequent in the Bucs passing attack. And on Sunday, wide receiver Scotty Miller’s error resulted in another Brady interception.

Speaking on Bucs Total Access this week, head coach Bruce Arians explained the mistake.

“Yeah, that’s something you cannot do,” Arians said. “You can’t start in and then go out. Then the quarterback throws it, and you go back in. And the [defender] really cut him off, did a hell of a job. But you gotta keep going outside where that ball is going to be thrown to and break it up.”

It was a frustrating mistake from Miller, who has made his living as a vertical route runner. But the receiver was returning after a foot injury had sidelined him for seven games. As the game continued, Miller made his presence felt in a number of key areas despite limited reps.

“Special teams, he’s probably our eighth “flyer” (gunner),” Arians said. “He hasn’t really ever done it. But he does have speed. He was at the right spot at the right time, got down there and recovered a fumble. He got a huge pass interference call too, on that long pass play.”

The diminutive receiver also threw a great block to spring Rob Gronkowski for a first down on a short third down reception. Despite just four offensive snaps, Miller made more of a positive impact than Tyler Johnson has in several weeks. If Antonio Brown is back for Week 13, both Miller and Johnson will return to ancillary roles. But if Brown sits out again, Miller could eat into Johnson’s reps a little bit. Provided he avoids those uncharacteristic route-running mistakes, of course.
