Latest Bucs Headlines

It was a tail of two halves for the Bucs as they dominated over the Bills in the first half by going up 24-3 after two quarters, only to sputter down the stretch as Buffalo tied up at 27-27 after regulation. This story had a happy ending, though, as Tom Brady connected with Breshad Perriman for his only catch of the game on a thrilling, 58-yard touchdown to win it, 33-27.

Here were the most disappointing moments and players from the game.

C Ryan Jensen

This one got off to an odd start as Jensen’s first snap of the game went wide of Brady, forcing the quarterback to jump on the ball for a loss of 14 yards. The Bucs nearly got that back after two receptions by Chris Godwin, but he ended up three yards short. The offensive line played well again, but those type of drive-killing snaps can’t happen, especially on the first play of the game. Jensen, who was playing on a sore ankle, later had a holding penalty that negated a penalty on Buffalo during the same play.

Bucs’ Quick-Change Offense

There were two instances in which the Bucs had great field position after quick transitions to get the ball back and weren’t able to score any points from it. The first came late in the second quarter following a Richard Sherman interception, which gave the Bucs the ball on the Bills’ 45-yard line with 40 seconds to go and three timeouts. The second occurred on the Bills’ opening drive of the third quarter in which Pat O’Connor stopped up-back Matt Breida on a fake punt, giving the the Bucs offense the ball at Buffalo’s 42-yard line. Each time the offense went three-and-out despite only having to drive less than half the field. In a game that went to overtime, every possession mattered, and Tampa Bay didn’t make either count.

Bucs’ Second Half Run Defense

Containing Buffalo QB Josh Allen is no easy task, but the Bucs did a fairly nice job of that in the first half and sacked him three times. That wasn’t the case for the entire run game in the second half when Buffalo started actually giving the ball to its running backs, and Allen was able to escape the pocket more. The Bucs allowed 43 yards on the ground in the first half, but a surprising 130 in the second half and overtime. Tampa Bay allowed an average of 9.1 yards per carry. It helped set up most of Buffalo’s scoring drives and Allen led the way with 12 attempts for 109 yards (9.1 avg.) and a touchdown in the game.

Bucs’ Second Half Offense

Part of the reason why the Bucs’ defense allowed the Bills to get back into the game was because they were so tired from being on the field so much. Tampa Bay’s offense took its foot off the gas in the second half, scoring just three points until Brady and Perriman’s overtime heroics. Outside of a field goal drive, the Bucs’ longest drive amounted to five plays in the second half, with two other drives being three-and-outs. There were a couple of times the Bucs were so close to the big play, only to see the ball just go off the outstretched fingertips of  Chris Godwin and Rob Gronkowski on close opportunties. With such a big lead, the Bucs got lazy and couldn’t regain the scoring touch until overtime.

P Bradley Pinion

While Pinion did fine on kickoffs, his punt late really hurt the Bucs in the fourth quarter. Following a three-and-out from the offense at their own 11, Pinion had a clunker of a punt that went just 35 yards and didn’t even get to midfield. The Bills then immediately drove down the field to score a touchdown and make it a three-point game. Pinion has a big leg, so to see him with such short punt with the whole field to go was unlikely of him.
