The return of Tom Brady after a brief retirement changed everything for the Bucs this offseason. Free agency has been a smashing success, quality outside players have signed in Tampa Bay and the Bucs are primed for another Super Bowl run. But their long term future at quarterback is still a question mark.

A year ago, the Bucs drafted Florida’s Kyle Trask in the second round to groom as a future starter. Right now, Trask is the only non-Brady quarterback currently on the roster. And the Bucs seem pretty comfortable with letting him compete for the No. 2 job this offseason.

“Well, I’ll start off with Kyle Trask, who is on our roster,” Bucs GM Jason Licht said in an interview on SiriusXM Mad Dog Sports Radio on Wednesday. “At the Combine, both Bruce and I were asked that question. Kyle is somebody that we’ve really been excited about. His progression last year as a backup quarterback. Learning behind Tom, learning behind Blaine and Ryan Griffin, some awesome pros. We’re really excited about him and I think he’s just going to continue to develop.”

Another likely option for the Bucs is bringing Blaine Gabbert back to compete with Trask. The Bucs think highly enough of Blaine that Trask beating him out would be a good measuring stick for the young quarterback. It would show Tampa Bay growth that they wouldn’t necessarily see from watching Trask ascend past Ryan Griffin.

“We had Blaine last year on our roster,” Licht said. “That could be a possibility still. But we’re still kind of checking out the entire market here. And we’ll see what happens.”

There have been rumors that the Bucs remain interested in Browns’ quarterback Baker Mayfield. At his current price tag, that speculation is absurd. Mayfield will make $18 million this season, and will likely require top 100 draft compensation to acquire. Both of those stipulations should be non-starters for the Bucs. However, it’s possible the Browns eat a significant portion of Mayfield’s salary too.

Either way, Licht didn’t rule out anything when asked about potentially acquiring Mayfield.

“We might still add someone,” Licht said. “I don’t want to talk about a player that is on another team’s roster right now. But we may still add a veteran quarterback. We’re just going to have to see how it goes here.”

Licht is one of the least demonstrative GMs in the NFL. His refusal to comment is a consistent staple of his time as general manager. Licht never addresses players on other rosters. Still, until Mayfield is actually traded, speculation will continue to run wild.
