The news does not come as a surprise, as Baker Mayfield entered training camp as the starter after a good showing in the offseason. Mayfield and Trask have been alternating days as the starter throughout training camp in the team’s quarterback competition, and Mayfield got the first start at the beginning of camp.
Mayfield, who was the first overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in 2018, has plenty of experience facing the Steelers for four seasons in the AFC North division.
Both quarterbacks have had bright spots in training camp, although Mayfield leads the team with seven interceptions, while Trask, who will start the second preseason game at the New York Jets in two weeks, only has two picks through 10 practices.
The Bucs will decide which quarterback starts the preseason finale against Baltimore in Tampa Bay based on what transpires in the first two preseason games and the joint practices against the Jets.
