Bucs general manager Jason Licht called quarterback Baker Mayfield “A dude” while having an interview Good Morning Football’s Peter Schrager on his podcast “The Season.” Mayfield has quickly ingratiated himself both in the Tampa community and with his teammates.

There will be some that aren’t a fan of Baker Mayfield for some of his antics earlier in his career. But those that know him well or are fans of Mayfield absolutely love him. Licht went into on just how much Mayfield has bought into forming a bond with everyone on the Bucs’ roster, but especially those he’s working with on the offense. He’s gone as far as traveling to the Bahamas with his offensive line to having drinks with Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and other wide receivers at local Tampa dive bars. What’s not to love?

“He’s a frickin awesome dude,” Licht said to Schrager. “He’s a dude. And the players saw it right away. Whether he’s taking the linemen to the Bahamas on our break during camp after final cuts to go golf or he’s spotted around town at dive bars with a different position group of receivers with Mike Evans, with (Chris) Godwin, with these guys. It’s not fake. He really knows how to be a dude with the team and they love him.”

Baker Mayfield had his own interview this week on the Rich Eisen Show where he confirmed said story from Licht about the Bahamas trip and the dive bar get togethers.

“We had three out of the five (starting) guys,” Baker Mayfield began. “Tristan Wirfs, Luke Goedeke and Robert Hainsey. We all went down Labor Day Weekend, the three day break we get with the three preseason games. We went down there, enjoyed some great weather, the water and just had a good time.

Then he went into the meeting with his wide receivers and the importance of getting everyone out.

“There’s a couple local watering holes we frequent,” Baker Mayfield said. “Got to get the guys out. You fight hard for each other, you got to enjoy the down time together. It’s a great group of guys. It’s not like it’s forcing anything, it’s just good friendship and I love those guys.”

Bucs Players Love Baker

Baker Mayfield has really embraced his time in Tampa since arriving. He’s played golf at local courses with various teammates, the introduction of his new charity alongside his wife Emily – the Baker & Emily Mayfield Foundation had it’s first event in this city and he’s even supported the other local teams, showing up to the Rays playoff game on Wednesday. Baker is a dude, and also a man of the people.

He’s a phenomenal quarterback,” starting right tackle Luke Goedeke said of Baker Mayfield. “He’s definitely one of the boys. We just love him to death and love playing for him.”

Baker Mayfield has often been seen stretching with the defensive linemen, particularly Vita Vea at the beginning of practice. It’s gone a long way to showing that everyone is working together, regardless of which side of the ball you’re on.

“That’s just huge to players when they see that,” Goedeke said. “Just a quarterback that doesn’t think he’s above other people. With that being said, I feel like offensive and defense a lot of times it’s like ‘Oh, I can’t talk to them because they’re on the offense.’ Especially during camp. But Baker, he’s an all around team guy, which I love that about him. He’s friends withe everyone in the locker room and we’re all just really close.”
