The Bucs are re-signing third string quarterback John Wolford, according to none other than Bucs general manager Jason Licht himself. Licht took to X and made the announcement about the move.

Wolford signed on with the Bucs last season and seemed to enjoy his first year in Tampa. He initially was on the practice squad, but after the Rams showed interest in him in late October, the Bucs decided to sign him to the 53-man roster.

The former Wake Forest quarterback was previously with the Rams from 2020-2022 and had proven to be the ideal No. 3 quarterback for the Bucs with new offensive coordinator at the time Dave Canales brought in an offense that had a rooted scheme similar to what Rams head coach Sean McVay had.

Wolford was a good presence in Tampa Bay’s quarterback room as Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask battled for the starting job throughout training camp. At times during camp, Wolford even looked like the best quarterback on the field among the group.

Wolford saw limited time in the preseason with the Bucs, going 10-of-17 for 111 yards and a touchdown against the Steelers before leaving the second exhibition game against the Jets with a neck injury. Before that injury, he was 4-of-4 for 57 yards. He did not play in the final preseason against the Ravens as those responsibilities were given to Mayfield and Trask.

Liam Coen Has Great Reviews For Bucs’ QB Wolford

It makes even more sense to re-sign Wolford as he has experience working with the newest Bucs offensive coordinator Liam Coen. Wolford played for him in 2019, 2020 and 2022. While the offense under Coen will be similar to what Tampa Bay was already running, there are surely to be some different tweaks and different terminology. Wolford can help facilitate and understanding with a different system.

Recently, Coen had a lot of positive things to say about Wolford. They get to reunite once again.

“He’s so sharp. It’s not just football,” Coen said about Wolford. “He’s an extremely intelligent person. Just being in the room, the situational football conversations that go on. What if this happens? What if that happens? What if they give you this? The dialogue that John helps bring to the table – it would be great to be able to get him back.

“Just another voice to be able to teach the system to the guys because he spent a ton of time in that system. Just the advantage of having both of those guys in the room helps the whole thing to go together.”
