There was some thought that the Bucs would eventually bring J.J. Russell back into the fold at inside linebacker in case they weren’t getting enough from their room or needed help on special teams. That thought is now a figment of everyone’s imagination as Russell, the former Buc, has signed with the Arizona Cardinals on a one-year deal, Arizona announced on Wednesday evening.
J.J. Russell’s Career With Bucs
Russell signed with Tampa Bay as an undrafted free agent out of Memphis in 2022. He played three seasons for Tampa and often was in competition during training camp competing for a last roster or linebacker spot. Each season he was put on the practice squad and then eventually he’d get called up to the active roster.

Over a span of three seasons Russell played in 30 games while starting four at inside linebacker. He’s recorded 49 tackles, one sack, two pass breakups and a fumble recovery. He received his most playing time last season playing in 16 games and starting in three of them. The Bucs went 2-1 with Russell replacing an injured K.J. Britt with wins over Carolina and New Orleans while falling to Dallas on Sunday Night Football.
Russell has been known for his high level hustle when on the Bucs. He was a good form tackler and never gave up on a play. It came as a bit of a surprise when the Bucs didn’t sign him this offseason, but Tampa Bay evidently wanted more change at inside linebacker. They wanted more speed at the position, which is why they didn’t pursue K.J. Britt. It appears Russell may have been another that didn’t reach the requirements that the Bucs have.
Tampa Bay will face Russell and the Cardinals this upcoming season at home in Raymond James Stadium in Week 13 on Sunday, November 30. That is also the same game where the Bucs will induct edge rusher Simeon Rice into the Ring Of Honor.
Bucs Go In Another Direction
Besides Lavonte David returning, the only other Buc that was brought back from last year was Deion Jones, who was signed in December. A big issue for Tampa Bay was there pass coverage over the middle as linebackers were beaten badly by the opposing tight ends. They added Anthony Walker Jr. to the team as a better fit in coverage for the defense.

Looking at the Bucs on paper, if SirVocea Dennis can stay healthy then they have a good duo starting at inside linebacker. Plus, there could be packages for Walker and Jones to get involved if necessary. There’s also a chance that undrafted free agent out of Nebraska John Bullock makes the roster or practice squad to provide the Bucs with extra depth if they want it.
