While Bucs fans eagerly await hearing Zac Robinson outline his offensive vision for Tampa Bay next Tuesday, the new offensive coordinator has already had his fair share of time in front of the podium. Listening to his past press conferences as the Falcons offensive coordinator, it is interesting to hear what Robinson had to say about how he wanted to adopt a similar philosophy to the Rams within Atlanta’s organization.

Obviously, that did not come to fruition, as the team finished 8-9 and fired head coach Raheem Morris after the season. Robinson was left searching for another chance to call plays and found it with the Bucs, where he will reunite with quarterback Baker Mayfield and aim to incorporate a style of production that head coach Sean McVay runs in Los Angeles, and one that is akin to what Liam Coen did in 2024.

Zac Robinson Shares What He Learned Under Rams HC Sean McVay

There is a reason why the Rams have had so much success since 2017. That was the year that Sean McVay became head coach and ushered in a new era of football in Los Angeles. Despite inheriting an offense that ranked as one of the worst in the league and of the decade, McVay turned things around and went 11-5 in his first season. Since then, the Rams have gone on to win the Super Bowl in 2021 and are in the hunt once again, standing as one of the final four teams competing for the Lombardi Trophy.

Zac Robinson saw that success up close, having worked under McVay from 2019-2023 in various roles along the offensive coaching staff. Robinson spent time as an assistant quarterbacks coach (2019, 2021), assistant wide receivers coach (2020), and as a pass game coordinator/quarterbacks coach (2022-2023). Those resume bullet points gave him the chance to become the Falcons offensive coordinator from 2024-2025, with that experience serving him well in landing the Bucs offensive coordinator job.

Still, when asked about his time in Los Angeles before Atlanta faced the Rams and beat them in Week 17, Robinson shared what he learned working under McVay.

“I think first and foremost is just culture over everything,” Robinson said earlier this month about what he has tried to mimic from the Rams as an offensive coordinator. “I think you look at that building, it’s an incredible culture set by Sean [McVay], set by the leaders in each position in that building. It’s a – the phrase that Sean always used, and it’s so true. There’s an urgency and enjoyment as well. Urgency and enjoyment. I think that’s displayed every single day in that building.

“It’s really cool to be fortunate to spend some time there and see the way that they operate. Obviously, the football part is at a very, very high level in terms of scheming and coaching and those types of things, but just the culture and how to treat players.”

That has played a big factor in the Rams’ turnaround and sustained success, as trading for Matthew Stafford before the 2021 season proved to the final piece to get them over the top. Since then, they have been as productive as ever, even after losing future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald to retirement. From the top down, there is no question their culture is second to none and that is a big reason why their coaching staff has become a pipeline for other NFL teams to pluck from on a yearly basis.

“It’s a really special place,” Robinson added. “I feel very fortunate and lucky sometimes that, that was my first coaching opportunity. I’ll always be grateful for Sean giving me that opportunity to get into coaching. I got there and obviously learned a lot about football, learned a lot about leadership, learned a lot about all the important things that go into coaching and go into this game that I’ll always carry, but forever grateful for the opportunity that he gave me…

“They’ve had, obviously, a ton of success. It’s no surprise when you’re there and then when you leave of why they do have the success just because the culture is so strong and everything is so consistent there as well.”

Good Things Take Time, But Bucs’ Offense Is Ready To Buy-In

Fortunately for Zac Robinson, one of the core pillars of building the Rams organization over the last decade is one that the Bucs have been building in recent years as well. Ever since Baker Mayfield signed as a free agent in 2023, Tampa Bay has formed a close-knit locker room that is resilient and prides itself on having strong chemistry. That allowed them to overcome mid-season slumps in 2023 and 2024, and while nearly everything went wrong in the second half of 2025, all hope is not lost for this next season.

Mayfield has all the tools to bounce back, and having Robinson in his corner gives the fiery quarterback a fighting chance to reestablish himself not only as a franchise quarterback, but as a premier player at the position. That will mean emphasizing his strengths as a gunslinger and getting him into an early rhythm. Running back Bucky Irving, along with wide receivers Chris Godwin Jr., Emeka Egbuka, Jalen McMillan, and Tez Johnson are locks to surround him. Add in the team re-signing Mike Evans for a 13th season and possibly tight end Cade Otton, and all the pieces are there for the good times to return.

We will see how Zac Robinson is able to make things work but there is optimism, given his offensive background and valuable experience calling plays with the Falcons while utilizing running back Bijan Robinson, wide receiver Drake London, and tight end Kyle Pitts. There is little doubt that the Bucs’ offense will buy what Robinson is selling, making way for a strong foundation that could be built quickly.

“I think it takes time for sure,” Robinson said about how long it takes to build a strong culture. “We want everything right now for sure and that’s the goal is to get everything going as soon as possible. The urgency every single week in this league is there, but all those things take time with implementing new schemes and the way that you go about moving throughout the day. All those things certainly take a little bit of time to build that culture.”

How the Bucs finish shaping the roster and coaching staff will ultimately determine their ceiling, but Robinson’s arrival checks several important boxes. His offensive background, familiarity with Mayfield, and grounding in a proven McVay-style system give Tampa Bay a realistic path back to its 2024 offensive form. Whether that rebound is enough to contend in 2026 will hinge on how quickly the offense adapts — and whether the defense can play complementary football.
