Former Bucs offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard has landed back on his feet after being let go by Tampa Bay after this past season. It was reported on Friday morning that Grizzard will be joining the Eagles as their pass game coordinator, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Josh Grizzard Does Not Land OC Job, But Goes Back To Role He Had With Bucs

While Josh Grizzard interviewed for the Eagles offensive coordinator job himself twice this offseason, he was passed over for that title. Former Packers quarterback coach Sean Mannion, who is just 33 years old, will be the team’s offensive play-caller instead. It is an interesting development that Grizzard will still head to Philadelphia, as he will provide a voice Mannion can rely on in a role he filled quite well with the Bucs in 2024. It was during that season he served as the pass game coordinator under offensive coordinator Liam Coen.

He served as an important part of Coen’s offense, as he specifically analyzed the use of shifts/motions and how to use it to generate space and attack zones. Grizzard’s job responsibilities included strategizing for third-down situations, with Tampa Bay leading the NFL with a team-record 50.9% third-down conversion rate.

His tenure as the Bucs offensive coordinator in 2025 replacing Liam Coen did not go as smoothly, however. Despite a promising background and attempting to build a similar style of offense, Tampa Bay averaged 22.4 points per game under Grizzard, which ranked 18th in the league. The team ranked 21st in total yards (320.4 yards per game), 20th in passing yards (205.9 yards per game), and 21st in rushing yards (114.5 yards per game).

Those results were underwhelming, especially considering the 6-2 start the team got off to. It was not all on the first-time offensive play-caller, as he was challenged with overcoming a multitude of various injuries along the offensive line, at wide receiver, and even at running back and quarterback throughout the year.

Despite that, Grizzard was let go by head coach Todd Bowles, who made him a scapegoat and fall guy. Toward the end of the season, “Grizz” was given directives instead of having the autonomy to run the offense how he desired. That led to instances where he was forced to go run-heavy in the game at Carolina rather than utilize wide receivers Mike Evans and Jalen McMillan, who each came back late in the year.

Now with the Eagles, Grizzard will be a key lieutenant under Mannion, who is a first-time play-caller himself. It remains to be seen how he will shape Philadelphia’s passing game, now working with quarterback Jalen Hurts, running back Saquon Barkley, and of course, wide receivers A.J. Brown and Devonta Smith. That is an intriguing set of weapons, and it will be less pressure not being the offensive coordinator this time around.

Still just 35 years old, there is no doubt Josh Grizzard has a bright future, even though it did not work out with the Bucs. It just may take more seasoning for him to land another play-calling job, but that may come as soon as next season if things go sunny in Philadelphia.
