Josiah Trotter spent the first week of Bucs training camp learning head coach Todd Bowles’ defense. Once the pads came on, he started playing it like he owned it. Bowles and several of Tampa Bay’s defensive players have noticed the same transformation, praising the rookie’s physicality, intensity and ability to flip a switch between the hash marks.

For Josiah Trotter, the transformation starts with his mindset.

“When I come out here, I try to separate the two as a player and person,” Trotter said about flipping the switch when he suits up. “I just know when I put these pads on, Josiah is out the window; I just become ‘Trot’ now at that point. I’m just trying to bring that mindset of everything that my dad instilled in me from a young age.

“I’m just here trying to set the tone, just be me, be a playmaker at the end of the day, do my job, try to compete and get better at the end of the day. As much as I’m trying to [make] them better, they’re [making] me better every single day.”

Trotter has become a menace near the line of scrimmage, coming downhill to block running lanes and record several tackles for loss. His best practice performance came last Monday, when he had three tackles for loss, two of which came on consecutive plays. Bowles knew that he would begin to make his presence known sooner rather than later.

“He’s been coming along great,” Bowles said. “We knew his impact would be felt once we got in pads. That’s kind of what we saw in college. He makes his presence felt. He’s really picking up the scheme really well and understanding what he can do to cheat to make plays within it.”

As Tampa Bay’s Mike linebacker, Trotter is not simply being asked to chase the football. He is responsible for getting the front seven aligned, communicating adjustments and understanding how his assignment fits with everyone else’s. That’s what makes Bowles’ praise about Trotter “cheating” within the scheme significant.

Trotter is not simply playing fast; he is beginning to understand where he can push the boundaries of his assignment without compromising the defense. He is approaching each play by dissecting his assignment, trusting the players around him, and playing fast.

“I feel really confident being out there playing within the scheme and [the] defense,” Trotter said. “I feel like I put the time in to be able to understand it. I just know my position, but [also I] know what’s going on around me. You’re like the QB of the defense, you [have] to know what’s going on around you.

“Just trusting that, not only am I going to do my job, but guys around me are going to do their job, especially at this level. This defense allows you to just play fast once you understand it – just knowing your job, your gap. I just feel like, especially within the blitzes, you just [have] to go, just have a go mindset. Within that, you just [have] to know your job and execute it. That’s about it.”

Josiah Trotter Is “A New-School Linebacker In An Old-School Body”

One of the most positive observations from Bucs training camp is seeing how all of the new defensive pieces are fitting together sooner than expected. The heightened energy is evident, but the rookies are bringing it just as much as the veterans.

“Hearing those guys [Rueben] Bain [Jr.] and ‘Trot’ [Josiah Trotter] talking, it lets me know [that] they’re locked in,” defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson said. “They’re focused. They’re hungry. They want it just as bad as everybody else out here. They want to do everything it takes, sacrifice, being consistent, communicate, overly communicate, talking smack, raising that level of competition is real… We just [have] to make sure we make it as feisty as we can in practice to get out what we want.”

The fact that Bain and Trotter, two 21-year-olds, are already being vocal and imposing themselves in practice suggests neither rookie is intimidated by the moment. Trotter, in particular, already comes off as an enforcer.

“I’m going to tell you something about that Trotter bloodline – he has some juice in him,” defensive tackle Rakeem Nunez-Roches said. “Some things that we saw inside, even out here, he’s an alpha amongst alphas.”

Cornerback Jacob Parrish also chimed in on Trotter’s alter ego.

“He’s got like an alter ego,” Parrish said. “He’s very quiet outside and when he’s on that field, he’s a dawg.”

Trotter has made an early impression in camp, with the physicality that defined his college career already showing up in Tampa Bay. The real test will come under the lights, but the early returns suggest the Bucs got the player they expected when they selected him 46th overall in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Todd Bowles is not ready to say what separates Josiah Trotter from other linebackers he has coached over the years. But two weeks into training camp, he already has a pretty good idea of what makes the rookie different.

“I can’t answer that in two weeks – what separates him – but he’s a good football player,” Bowles said. “He’s got size, and he comes downhill. We’ve had more athletic ones in the past. He’s very athletic – I’m not taking that away from him – but he comes downhill. He’s almost like a new-school linebacker in an old-school body, and he really knows how to play the game, and he really plays with intent to do serious harm.”
