If there’s been one common thread throughout Bucs training camp in 2026, it’s been the fact that the team has been relatively short-handed at the wide receiver position for most of the month.

So, that’s why it comes as no surprise that even after signing a wide receiver after Tuesday’s practice, the Bucs have signed another following Wednesday’s practice and ahead of Friday night’s preseason finale against the Jaguars. The team announced Wednesday afternoon that it has waived receiver Dennis Houston with an injury designation and signed another pass-catcher, Jha’Quan Jackson, to fill his roster spot.

Jackson is a 5-foot-9, 188-pound receiver who played his college football at Tulane from 2019-2023. Over 56 career games with the Green Wave, he posted 109 receptions for 1,743 yards (16.0 avg.) and 17 touchdowns. He was a second-team All-AAC selection as a return man in 2022 and a All-AAC third-teamer in 2023.

A sixth-round pick by the Titans in 2024, Jackson played in 12 games as a rookie and caught one pass for 8 yards. Most of his contributions came in the return game, where he returned 16 kicks for 412 yards (25.8 avg.) and 28 punts for 215 yards (7.7 avg.). Following his time with Tennessee, Jackson spent some time with the Saints in 2025 and the Texans in 2026.

Now, he joins the Bucs just two days before the 2026 preseason finale and three days before the team will have to cut its roster down to 53 players. Jackson will wear No. 39 for Tampa Bay.

And as Fox Sports’ Greg Auman pointed out, Jackson is the nephew of Pro Football Hall of Famer Ed Reed.

Bucs Need As Many Receivers As Possible For Preseason Finale

In signing a player like Jha’Quan Jackson this late in training camp, the Bucs are filling the need for a body at a banged-up position more than looking for an impact player who will make the roster and contribute to this year’s team. After all, Jackson won’t even have a day to practice with Tampa Bay, as Wednesday was the team’s final practice of camp. It’ll play Friday night in its preseason finale at Jacksonville, then make roster cuts.

But the Bucs are thin at receiver going into that game due to both injuries and the desire to rest key starters who were never in line to play in the exhibition finale anyway. Chris Godwin Jr. falls in the latter category, while Emeka Egbuka and Jalen McMillan are both out injured. Whether the likes of Tez Johnson and Ted Hurst suit up remains to be seen, as does the number of snaps they’d play if they do see game time.

Kameron Johnson, Garrett Greene, Dean Patterson IV and David Sills V are the receivers in play for this game otherwise, while Eric Rivers Jr. is a question mark after missing Tuesday’s practice. The newly signed Matthew Henry, off one day of practice, can go, too. But with Dennis Houston’s injury, general manager Jason Licht made another call.

That brought Jha’Quan Jackson into the fold, and while he’ll have very little time to catch up on the playbook ahead of Friday night, it gives Tampa Bay another body both in the receiver room and on special teams.
