The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced on Tuesday the trading of cornerback Johnthan Banks to the Detroit Lions. The team also announced the official signing of running back Mike James.

It was widely reported on Monday that Banks was being waived, but the Bucs were able to find a trade partner for the fourth-year pro shortly before the 4 p.m. trade line on Tuesday.

Banks was traded to Detroit in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He played in 50 games for Tampa Bay (2013-16), with 37 starts, totaling 130 tackles, 16 passes defensed and seven interceptions.

James (5-10, 223) was originally drafted by the Buccaneers in the sixth round (189th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. He spent this past offseason and preseason with Tampa Bay, before being waived (injured) on September 14. He was signed to the Detroit Lions’ practice squad on October 3 and was released on October 25. In three seasons with the Buccaneers (2013-15), James played in 20 games, with three starts, rushing 79 times for 332 yards and catching 11 passes for 38 yards. He will wear No. 25 for Tampa Bay.

Defensive coordinator Mike Smith talked about Banks on Tuesday.

“I think Johnthan Banks could fit this scheme and I think Alterraun Verner can fit this scheme,” Smith said. “Again, we went through an open competition throughout the offseason. And we’re going to play the guys that give us the best opportunity to win and I wish Johnthan Banks the absolute best. Great guy, great teammate and that’s what you’ve got to have in this league. You’ve got to have great teammates. He did everything we asked and again, when you’re putting together a 53-man roster and you get into the season decisions have to be made.”
