The hero from the Bucs Week 8 loss to the Saints should have been wide receiver Cyril Grayson. If the Tampa Bay defense hadn’t fallen on their faces, Grayson’s 50-yard touchdown with less than six minutes left would have been the game-winning score. On Bucs Total Access this week, head coach Bruce Arians explained how the play came together.
“It was a play in practice that looked so good,” Arians said. “You knew they were going to double Mike [Evans]. And Chris [Godwin] was involved. They got all the attention. Cyril is so fast, he ran right by them. I didn’t expect him to be that wide open! But the play looked so good in practice. It was one of those ones you can’t wait to call. And I thought [offensive coordinator] Byron [Leftwich] called it at the perfect time.”
This go-ahead TD from Tom Brady to Cyril Grayson Jr. was so great. Look at the carnage created from the blocks from both Leonard Fournette & Ryan Jensen! The results kept Tom clean so he could step up into the throw. Awesome stuff. #Bucsfilm2021wk8 pic.twitter.com/S6PeNT62bI

Sure enough, both Saints cornerbacks Marshon Lattimore and Paulson Adebo bite up on Evans’ out-breaking route, leaving Grayson in the clear. It looks like Lattimore should have continued to get depth on the play. Pro Football Focus charged the touchdown to the veteran cornerback.
The score put the Bucs up 27-26 with 5:44 left in the game. It was Grayson’s second career catch and first career touchdown. The former LSU track star had three targets last year, but zero catches and two drops. Grayson was only active because of injuries to Antonio Brown and Scotty Miller. The 50-yard score was his only target of the game.
Offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich dialed up a few big plays at the right time on Sunday, but it wasn’t enough. The Bucs will return to action against the Washington Football Team on Sunday, November 14.
