The Bucs were able to claw their way back from an early 24-7 deficit, led by 369 passing yards and five touchdowns to five different receivers from quarterback Tom Brady, to escape their Week 4 match-up against the Chargers with a 38-31 win.
In addition to Brady’s big day, running back Ronald Jones had a career-high with 111 rushing yards on 20 carries and cornerback Carlton Davis sealed the game with his second interception of the season.
Head coach Bruce Arians spoke to the media following Tampa Bay’s win, read the full transcript below.
(On whether Ndamukong Suh’s forced fumble was the biggest play of the game)
“I don’t think there’s any doubt. We were making plans to go into halftime thinking that they were going to take a knee, we had one time out. They decided to run the ball and Suh does a great job of getting it out and then [Brady] makes a hell of a play for the touchdown. Three points there is like, eh, that’s kind of a deflated win but the touchdown really made a difference.”
(On Brady’s performance)
“I thought he just played outstanding. I’ve just got to coach him up better on that one play and get it coached better but he played fantastic and was lights out in the second half.”
(On Ronald Jones stepping up)
“He just kept pounding, kept pounding, finding holes, finding the soft spot and then breaking tackles. I thought that he broke a lot of tackles and made 4-yard runs into some 10s and 11s. And can’t say enough about Ke’Shawn [Vaughn] stepping in there for his first time and getting a big touchdown catch.”
(On the difference in scoring between the second half this week and past weeks)
“I think that [being down] was the big thing. We knew that we had played poorly and it was just a show of character. I can honestly say, was this last year, we would have gotten our ass beat by 20. This team has a ton of character and play-makers. We started to make plays and you can see that if we don’t beat ourselves, we’re going to be a tough team to beat.”
(On how much of that character comes from Brady)
“I think that it’s all of those captains and all of those guys, defensively, Lavonte [David] and all of those guys. Suh made the big play but yeah, Tom is never behind in his mind so we can always make plays to win games.”
(On the effort from Mike Evans)
“You can’t say enough about it. He tweaked that ankle and taped it up and gutted it out and just had a huge day. We were coming into the day hoping to get him 15, 18 targets. He missed a little bit of time there and I think that he would have gotten it. But huge day from Mike and this was one of the teams that played a little bit of double coverage but not much.”
(On O.J. Howard and his injury)
“He was having a great, great game and I thought that Tommy was going to throw it to him for the touchdown when he threw it to Ke’Shawn but it looks like he has a ruptured Achilles and will probably be done for the year.”
(On if the offense was as good as it can be in the second half)
“I think there were some times that we hit a little bit of a lull, but I thought that from the last 50 seconds [of the first half] to the end of the ball game, we made plays to win the ball game. Very seldom does our defense give up a lead but they did and we bounced right back and got the score and then we get the huge interception to ice it. I think that we can still play better, but we’re getting there.”
(On if this offense gets him excited about the future when it’s moving so well)
“I think that injuries are taking their toll just like every team in the NFL right now. It’s the next man up so we’ll have to get on a short week and get ready for a hell of a team in Chicago and travel up there in what we’ve got left. I don’t think that Chris [Godwin] will be ready, I think Leonard [Fournette] has a chance but obviously losing O.J. was huge.”
(On the offensive line)
“I think that they accepted a challenge. I don’t think that Tom really went down unless he held it for a while but they did a heck of a job in the run game and the passing game. And when you run the ball that well you’re going to have some wide open play action and they did a really good job with that too.”
(On the improvement of Vaughn)
“I think that’s all of these young kids. They’ve missed so much and especially the ones who were sick or got hurt, Tyler [Johnson], Ke’Shawn. About two or three weeks ago his dauber was down, he didn’t think he was going to get much action and I told him, hey, you never know and when it comes it’s going to be extremely important so be ready. He was. Hell of a catch, hell of a run, getting that thing in the end zone and he played really well.”
(On the energy from the fans)
“There ain’t no doubt. It wasn’t quiet quiet. You could hear them hollering and I could hear them bitching too, that was great. They needed to bitch there for a while so I was loving it when they were doing it. I think that our guys were hearing it too so that was awesome.”
(On his impression of Justin Herbert)
“I told Anthony [Lynn] after the game, you’ve got a great one. That retreating play looked like [Pat] Mahomes where we had an all-out blitz and he just kept retreating and threw a dime down the field. For rookies to make plays like that, you know they’re special.”
(On what he saw to draw up so many deep throws in the second half)
“I think most of it was due to some of the runs that we set up. We were running it very well and then we got some crossing routes off of the play action, Scotty [Miller] in the seam, O.J. in the seam. Then it was just throw it up to Mike. He did push off on the one but throw it up again, he’s going to come down with those 50/50 balls and he did, Scotty too.”
(On the two consecutive plays to Miller for the touchdown)
“They were playing a lot of single-high, loading up the box on first down and you knew that the safety was going to cheat to Mike. Scotty just outran him and Tommy put a dime on it and then we came right back with a hard play action with Scotty crossing the field and the linebackers had to bite on the play action because we were running the ball so well. Wide open.”
