Quarterback Baker Mayfield has been a revolutionary quarterback for the Bucs during his time in Tampa Bay. He surely wants to be with the team for a long time and the Bucs recently have shown they are committed to rewarding Baker Mayfield for his accomplishments and being up front about their belief in him for years to come.

Although the team isn’t prepared to give the star quarterback a contract extension – and a raise – just yet, Mayfield spoke with CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco on Monday at Bucs training camp where he revealed that Tampa Bay is fully guaranteeing his base salary next season in 2026, which will be the final year of his deal. He signed a three-year contract last offseason that the Bucs technically could have gotten out of in the third year of it, but Mayfield has played so well and is so important to the DNA of this team that they are rewarding him instead.

Baker Mayfield Breaks His Own News

“Right now, I’m under contract through ’26,” Baker Mayfield told CBS Sports. “So it was really just about getting guaranteed money for ’26, and they did that. And that’s all I can ask for. I signed the contract, I knew what it was. Right now, it’s winning. I know good things will happen after that. I trust this place. I love being here. Obviously, used to bouncing around. I’ve done that before, but I don’t want to leave. It’s how can we win right now? We have a team that’s really, really well built and [General Manager Jason Licht] and those guys did it. So, if we win right now good things will happen.”

Here is the full conversation between Mayfield and CBS Sports’ Pete Prisco.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter also reported that the Bucs reworked the final year of Mayfield’s 2026 contract that guarantees him $30 million of his $40 million on the season. It confirms Mayfield’s comments from earlier.

Baker Mayfield Could Be The Top Bucs’ QB In Team History

This will be Baker Mayfield’s third season with the Bucs heading into the 2025 season and he’ll have four years with Tampa Bay when his contract ends after the 2026 campaign. Depending on how this season and next year goes, Mayfield will have a chance to move up the ranks in the Bucs’ all-time passing categories.

Since joining the Bucs, Mayfield now ranks 11th all-time in team history with 8,544 passing yards and 69 touchdown passes in a Tampa Bay uniform. With two more seasons he can likely move into the top three in passing yards, potentially moving into first, and can likely become the top touchdown passer in franchise history.

Mayfield threw for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns last seasons. If he were to duplicate that for two more seasons it would put him second in passing yards and first in touchdowns. Regardless, Mayfield has already helped the team win two division titles, has become a two-time Pro Bowler, and as Jon Gruden recently told Pewter Report, is a “pain in the ass” for opposing defenses to deal with. All that’s missing is a Super Bowl championship and he would be in the conversation with Tom Brady as the best quarterback in franchise history.

The Bucs have high expectations for their team going into the 2025 season and an eye on the ultimate prize. Mayfield is a big component of attempting to get the Bucs back to the title game. They’ll have at least two more cracks at it in the next two seasons with a star-studded nucleus that gives them the potential to do so.
