Behind Enemy Lines is a weekly look at Tampa Bay’s NFC South foes every Tuesday morning. Let’s spy on the Bucs’ division rivals, shall we?

Atlanta Falcons

• The Falcons are continuing to try and bolster their anemic pass rush and traded for former Dolphins’ first-round pick Charles Harris. The former Missouri standout was the 22nd overall pick in 2017, but hasn’t had the success to warrant his draft status with 61 total tackles and just 3.5 career sacks in his three seasons in the NFL. Atlanta gave up a seventh-round pick to acquire Harris, and soon after declined to pick up his fifth-year option.

Atlanta added Dante Fowler, Jr. earlier this year, and drafted Auburn defensive end Marlon Davidson in the second round of the draft in April.

• The Falcons also chose to not pick up the fifth-year option of defense end Takk McKinley who was also drafted in 2017, four spots after Harris. McKinley has been considerably more productive during his first three seasons in the NFL, notching 16.5 sacks and 71 tackles. The Falcons aren’t giving up on McKinley, but in a statement said they were going to take a wait-and-see approach with their former UCLA standout.

• While we are still waiting to see how the COVID-19 pandemic is going to affect the NFL’s regular season, we already know it’s impact has been felt. The Falcons were set to head to London for an international series game, but the league scrapped all games being played overseas, including Mexico.

• SI.com has released their odds on how many games they think the Falcons will win and it is very similar to last season’s final record of 7-9.

Carolina Panthers

• Even after what looked to be a solid draft, the Carolina Panthers aren’t getting much love when evaluating their overall talent on the roster. ESPN released its power rankings that was determined by national media members and the Panthers only came in at No. 27. The Buccaneers came in ranked 7th.

• Like most college coaches that come to the NFL, Carolina head coach Matt Rhule loves familiarity. Of the 17 players the Panthers signed as unrestricted free agents, a few have ties to Rhule’ time at Baylor and even before that at Temple or indirectly as opponents he faced. He also added a former Buccaneer.

Guard Sam Tecklenburg played for Rhule for three seasons at Baylor after converting from a tight end to an offensive lineman and played guard and center in college.

Cornerback Derrek Thomas played for Rhule at both Temple and Baylor as he transferred to join Rhule following the 2017 season. Temple linebacker Sam Franklin was added along with TCU receiver TreVontae Hights.

The Panthers also signed former Bucs defensive end DaVonte Lambert. Lambert recorded 14 tackles and a forced fumble in 11 games with Tampa Bay in 2016, but spent the next year on injured reserve. He was out of the NFL in 2018 and 2019 and spent time in the XFL with St. Louis before then new league folded.

• As a rookie head coach, Rhule is learning about the power struggles that go on between coaches and general managers. According to The Athletic’s Joe Person, Rhule was “Over-Rhuled” but G.M. Marty Hurney on draft night. Rhule thought the Panthers should perhaps trade out of their Np. 7 slot and pick up more draft picks but he was overruled by Hurney who decided the Panthers would draft Auburn’s Derrick Brown.

• Former Panthers QB Cam Newton is still a free agent two months after being released by Carolina but will eventually find a home. Where, however, is still a mystery. According to odds from Las Vegas, the Jaguars are the favored team to acquire Newton’s service, follow by the New England Patriots and the Washington Redskins.

• According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Panthers waived running back Marcus Murphy.

New Orleans Saints

• The big news out of New Orleans last week was the addition of former Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston, who signed a one-year $1.1 million base salary deal to compete with Taysom Hill to be a backup behind Drew Brees.

Winston isn’t the only new player New Orleans added. The Saints are signing former Indianapolis Colts defensive lineman Margus Hunt according to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. The deal is expected to be just a one-year contract.

• Saints punter and NFLPA executive committee member Thomas Morstead believes the NFL will play games in 2020, but not so sure if fans will be in attendance.

“I’m not a doctor and all I’m doing is basing my opinion on what I’m reading and what I’m educating myself with, but from what I’m reading and hearing, I don’t know how we are going to play in front of fans this year,” Morstead said to CBS Sports. “I’m pretty pessimistic about that. I am hopeful that we will have a season. No one wants to have a season where we can’t have games with our fans, but I also feel like if you were going to poll the majority of fans — just to have the access to the season even if they couldn’t attend games, just to be able to watch on TV — I think most everybody would want a season. We’ll kind of cross that bridge when we get to it.”

• There was some head scratching going on with the Saints first round selection of offensive lineman Cesar Ruiz out of Michigan, as most had New Orleans selecting one of the many excellent receivers in this year’s deep draft class. But according to Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, the Saints weren’t pleased with guard Larry Warford’s play in 2019, prompting the selection of Ruiz. Warford and Ruiz will compete for the staring guard spot this fall.
