Here are some of the best Bucs quotes following their team’s training camp practice on Thursday, August 19 at the AdventHealth Training Center.
Bucs head coach Bruce Arians opening Statement:
“Really pleased with the work we’ve gotten the last two days – extremely good competition. Obviously, it always happens when the flyers and the gunners get together, something starts. But it was spirited, it was great practice and I really appreciate the Titans for coming down here and helping us get better, and hopefully we made them better.”
Bucs head coach Bruce Arians on RB Giovani Bernard having a ‘pretty good’ camp:
“I would say more than ‘pretty good.’ I would say the best thing about him, he’s the ultimate pro. He’s super-prepared. He came every day in OTAs when he didn’t have to. He wanted to be a major part of the offense and he is already. He’ll play a little bit Saturday night just to continue to grow in this offense, but not much.”
Bucs head coach Bruce Arians on rookie OLB Joe Tryon showing growth in the last week going against other opponents:
“He’s gotten better every single day. That’s what he needs to see is guys that play at this level. Play a little bit more under control, you know? The hit he had on the quarterback [against Cincinnati], he did hit him in the head, so whether he was a runner or a quarterback – we’ve got to lower that target. He’s good enough to do that. He’s learning on the job.”
Bucs head coach Bruce Arians on who will start at quarterback on Saturday:
“Blaine [Gabbert] will start the game and we’ll see how the rest of it goes.”
Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin on how valuable joint practices with Tennessee have been:
“It’s [been] very valuable – I think anytime you get an opportunity to go against another team – especially a very good team — a playoff team last year – to get some quality work, I think it’s best to take advantage of it. They’ve got some really good players – competition was high so it’s good to go out there and get some good work [in].”
Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin on the intensity level during today’s practice:
“I can definitely tell you that the intensity was much higher today – I feel like it always is on the second day of joint practices, especially in the heat like this, tempers can get going. Guys are just competitors, so I don’t think there was anything out of the norm, it didn’t really escalate to anything which is good. Like I said, it cranked up the intensity which is better for all of us as the practice went along.”
Bucs linebacker Devin White on OLB Joe Tryon:
“Right now, so far, he’s just a relentless effort guy. That was the kind of guy I was as a young guy before I started learning even more. I would think if I don’t know everything, I am going to go full speed and let my effort in and let itself take over. That’s basically what he’s doing right now but he has a great coach in Coach Larry Foote. I think eventually the game will slow down and he’ll be able to use those intangibles with his coaching. I would say that’s the number one thing. That’s what separates the boys from the men are the ones that can take great coaching. His coach played the game at a high level for a long time and won Super Bowls. So, if he can take the constructive criticism from him and apply it to his game, I think the sky is the limit for him. He has two great Pro Bowlers and All-Pros in front of him (Shaquil Barrett and Jason Pierre-Paul) that he can learn from as well, so his job is really easy right now.”
Bucs linebacker Devin White on what they need to work on before the first game against Dallas:
“As far as the defensive side of the ball, the number one thing we need to accomplish is being consistent. We can’t get punched in the mouth and then decide we want to punch back. We have to come out there like we already got punched even before the game starts. Whatever it takes for us to do that to be able to start fast – we have to find out what it’s going to take and we have to start doing it and we’ve got to start prepping on it now. Those guys are going to come in fired up and everybody knows we’re going to get everybody’s best shot. Last year, I felt like we were doing the hunting and this year we’re being hunted for sure. We have to come out there hands up, ready to fight.”
Bucs cornerback Jamel Dean on how he improved his three-step recognition going into this season:
“Really film study and getting reps out of it. After each rep, I like asking him (Defensive Coordinator Todd Bowles) what I did wrong and then he explains it to me and then I’ll go up to his office to watch the film and see what I’m doing without realizing it. Then, I make it a key focus to work on it during practice.”
Bucs cornerback Jamel Dean on things he wants to improve on:
“My technique isn’t perfect so I try to work every possible technique that I can. Because I don’t want anything to fall off when it gets time for the season. I don’t need anything new. If I need to change something up during the game, I need to be able to master it.”
