Here are some of the best Bucs quotes following their team’s training camp practice on Saturday, August 7 at the AdventHealth Training Center.
Bucs head coach Bruce Arians opening statement
“Really, really good practice. Parts of it were a little bit out of hand but again I’d rather say ‘Whoa’ then ‘Sic ’em.’ Love the short-yardage goal-line period; it’s always one of my favorites in camp because it gets everybody riled up. Good physical fronts on both sides and a lot of good ebb and flow to that practice. Still young guys having an opportunity to make plays that aren’t making them. Hopefully they’ll do it in ballgames or they won’t be here. There were some opportunities out there today that some young guys had. One really good was [Jamel] Dean blocking a field goal; that was an outstanding play. But there’s other guys who had some really good plays today.”
Bucs head coach Bruce Arians on TE O.J. Howard’s progress
“Yeah, he’s where he needs to be, he’s just got to get in shape, football shape. Getting hit and things like that – he got knocked down when a guy was being blocked because he should have knocked the shit out of that guy and practiced that way. So it’s just getting back into hitting. As far as physical, he’s fine; it’s just playing football.”
Bucs head coach Bruce Arians on rookie WR Jaelon Darden’s progress
“Oh yeah, Jaelon, he’s improved. He’s just learning routes versus man. We specifically put him in one-on-ones because he’s been struggling. He’s beating everybody clean and he keeps breaking back [instead of] going for touchdowns. Just go for the touchdown. He’ll see it, he’ll learn it, but he’s getting off the line of scrimmage really, really well.”
Bucs head coach Bruce Arians on if the players are anxious to start playing games
“It’s that time – tired of hitting each other. But we’ve got three more days of it. You’ve just got to push through it, like today. [They] have tomorrow off and we’ll cut this day short a little bit for them and come back and have a really spirited Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday. [We’ll] look at Cincinnati a little bit for the young guys to just give them a chance to know what they’re going to see.”
Bucs WR Jaelon Darden on how comfortable he is after two weeks of training camp and being in the NFL
“Definitely feeling comfortable day by day. I’m taking it day by day – ‘Coach G’ (Wide Receivers Coach Kevin Garver) is doing a great job with guiding me, kind of slowing the process down for me. I feel like I’m doing a good job coming out here, making plays and helping my teammates as best as possible.”
Bucs WR Jaelon Darden on the adjustments he’s needed to make running routes for QB Tom Brady
“Mostly the mental aspect of the game – I’ve had to change that, not anything with my routes – more so just being where I need to be and knowing where I need to be and knowing how to read coverages and things of that nature.”
Bucs Mike Evans on if this is his best training camp yet
“I would say so. Dealing with the heat, getting more reps, the fact that I’m in better shape. I feel like I’m learning a lot more. Each year, I try to focus on improvement, and I feel like I’m improving.”
Bucs WR Mike Evans on if any of the other receivers in the group have shown anything
“This is the best receiver group I’ve been around from top to bottom. Some of the guys that don’t make it on this team I’m pretty sure they’ll be somewhere else. I’m having a blast trying to help these young guys get their foot in this game and try to teach them some things that will help them in their careers.”
Bucs OT Tristan Wirfs on his thoughts on OLB Joe Tryon and how size can make it difficult to defend sometimes
“Joe is a really good player – he’s got a lot of juice, a lot of energy, plays with a lot of leverage. I mean he’s got long arms, he’s fast – you don’t see a lot of people that are built like him. He’s tough to handle sometimes. I think just getting your hands on him – he comes off the ball so fast. In certain situations, like if I’m getting my eyes out to him late – if I’m in a shift or something – he gets his hands on me first, you really have to throw your feet back and sit down and sometimes it’s harder to recover from it. Like Anthony Nelson, he’s got really long arms too – that’s always tough to deal with.”
Bucs OT Tristan Wirfs on if practice seemed more intense today during the goal line period
“A little bit maybe. I just think it was real intense having our first live period – short yardage and goal line are two pretty intense periods. I thought it was awesome – the energy kind of ramped up. Gio (Giovani Bernard) got that first down and that kind of sparked everything – so that was a lot of fun.”
