Bucs backup quarterback John Wolford sustained a neck injury late in the third quarter of the team’s second preseason game against the New York Jets. Wolford, who was the second quarterback in the game, relieving Kyle Trask, was brought down hard by Jets defensive lineman Jalyn Holmes as he tried to navigate a crumbling pocket. As Holmes fell on Wolford, his head appeared to whip onto the ground hard.
Wolford remained on the ground without movement following the end of the play. Trainers came out and assisted Wolford off the field on a stretcher while keeping his head from moving.
Wolford was seen moving his extremities and gave the crowd a thumbs up as he was carted off the field.
With Wolford having to leave the game the Bucs had Trask, who started the game, re-enter. Baker Mayfield was held out of the game entirely after head coach Todd Bowles announced prior to the first pre-season game that he would come in after Trask in game two against the Jets.
John Wolford’s Injury Leaves Bucs With Just 2 QBs For Preseason Finale
John Wolford’s neck injury complicates things for the Bucs in their preseason finale against the Ravens next week.
John Wolford's injury makes things interesting for next week's #Bucs preseason finale. Baker Mayfield probably plays a series or two – maybe a quarter.
But then Kyle Trask will have to play the rest of the game with 2nd/3rd string OL – for a second straight week.
