The Bucs are bringing in another coach to fill out their staff  as ESPN’s Pete Thamel reports that Jordan Somerville is going to be the assistant quarterbacks coach in Tampa Bay. Somerville comes from the college ranks where he was an offensive analyst for the University of Oregon.

Somerville got his coaching start as a graduate assistant at Arizona State in 2019. He then became the running backs coach for New Mexico State where he coached that position and was a recruiting coordinator for the Lobos from 2020 to 2021. His last stop at the collegiate level as previously stated was with Oregon as the Ducks had a 10-3 record and won the Holiday Bowl, defeating North Carolina 28-27.

Bucs Have More Coaches To Get Most Out Of QB Room

The Bucs know they have a huge goal this year to get the most out of their starting quarterback. The first option for the time being is Kyle Trask, who is the only player at the position on the roster and his most playing time was half way through the fourth quarter of a week 18 game last season.

There’s also a likelihood that a veteran quarterback or two joins the roster, plus the Bucs could draft one in April. What they’ll all have in common is that they are learning offensive coordinator Dave Canales’ system for the first time, unless Tampa Bay signs Drew Lock, who played for the Seahawks when Canales was on the coaching staff.

Canales is calling the plays but was also a former quarterbacks coach. He’ll be the extremely important to the development of Trask and whoever else ends up on the roster. While Thad Lewis just became the quarterbacks coach after a stint as an assistant wide receivers coach for the Bucs, he did play quarterback at Duke from 2006 to 2009.

Add in Somerville to the mix and you have another coach with a different viewpoint and background in football. That’s exactly what head coach Todd Bowles wanted when building out his offensive coaching staff. He was looking for coaches that he wasn’t as familiar with so they can bring in fresh ideas and a different look on how to run the offense. With Canales and Somerville as new hires in Tampa Bay, they just might have it.
