Latest Bucs Headlines

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers latest addition to the roster is in the tight end room. The Bucs announced this morning that they have signed tight end David Wells to the practice squad. To make room for him, the team released fellow tight end JJ Howland.

For Wells, this marks his latest NFL stop in a career full of them. The 27-year old out of San Diego State was last with the Tennessee Titans during training camp and was recently released from their practice squad on September 2. The undrafted free agent started his career with the Dallas Cowboys in 2018 and since that time has also been on the Chiefs, Patriots, Falcons, Colts, and the Cardinals. The Buccaneers will mark the eighth stop for Wells in his career so far.

What Does He Offer The Bucs?

Wells has yet to log any stats in the box score despite appearing in three games with the Arizona Cardinals last year, including starting one. His role in college at San Diego State, where he was a two-time All-Mountain West selection, included blocking for the nation’s leading rusher at the time, Rashaad Penny.

If the need were to arise for the Bucs to have another blocking tight end on the roster, that would be the likely role for Wells. He has the size (6-6, 260) and background to be a factor there.

For Howland, this marks the end of his Bucs tenure. The undrafted rookie out of Yale made the practice squad coming out of training camp but essentially Wells will take his spot. Howland had a camp full of ups and downs but will likely latch on elsewhere.
