With training camp officially over the Bucs have moved to their traditional regular season practice schedule with two weeks remaining in preseason. When Arians spoke to the Tampa media following practice on Monday, injuries were a hot topic regarding timetables and which players that were currently being held out of practice would be able to make Friday’s game against the Cleveland Browns. Read the full transcript below.
(On practice)
“It’s been a good week of work so far. We’re obviously changing the schedule into a game-style week so it’s new for everybody but the tempo of practice both days have been really, really good. We finished a bit early. A good test coming up. We’ll see how long [the starters] play, that’ll depend on how well we do. We never have it set in stone how many plays they’ll play or how long they’ll play, I get a feel for that at the game.”
(On if weather plays a factor in how much the starters play)
“No. We’ve got to play in it. There’s probably a good chance we’re going to have it in September.”
(On if injuries play a factor in playing time during bad weather)
“It depends on how minor. If it’s a bump or a bruise they’ll play. If it’s a legitimate injury he won’t play.”
(On having Scotty Miller back at practice)
“It was good to see him back, he was limited. Ruben Holcomb was back limited. A couple of the guys are starting to make some progress coming back.”

(On how much catching up Scotty Miller has to do)
“A lot, he hasn’t played. He missed two games and a lot of practice time, all that time against the Dolphins, so he’s got a lot of making up to do.”
(On Mike Evans and Ronald Jones missing practice)
“Ronald’s knee swelled up a bit so we’re trying to take it day by day with him and Mike tweaked yesterday so we’ll see, it’s nothing serious.”
(On if the injuries are serious enough to keep them out of Friday’s game)
“We’ll see how it is, we’ve got a few more days. I think Ronald will probably be OK, I don’t know about Mike.”
(On if Emanuel Hall will get an extended look during Friday’s game)
“He won’t know enough to get an extended look. He’ll get a look, but he’s getting a lot of looks during practice.”
(On Terry Beckner Jr.)
“Terry has been very solid. He’s more of an inside player. I’d like to see him have a little more position flexibility but he’s a [3-technique] and a nosetackle and he’s batting a lot of balls down.”

Bucs SS Mike Edwards – Photo by: Cliff Welch/PR
(On Mike Edwards’ estimated time for a return)
“Your guess is as good as mine. I’m not a doctor, I just know he’s out.”
(On Hakeem Nunez-Roches’ preseason so far)
“Don’t jinx him, but pretty damn good. He’s played a lot of plays and he’s played really, really well. He’s maximized his opportunities in practice and in the games.”
(On Dare Ogunbowale overcoming being an undrafted free agent who’s been cut and signed multiple times)
“He’s probably been as hurt as guys who have missed practice and he hasn’t missed any, that tells me a lot. I don’t but into the past, I buy into what I see, and what I’ve seen of him, you wouldn’t guess those things.”
(On Jack Cichy)
“He battled that rehab hard and showed up in special teams and he’s one of those high motor guys I like.”
(On if it’s difficult to evaluate Anthony Nelson when he remains injured)
“I’ve evaluated him enough, it’s just time for him to get back when he can.”
(On if the Bucs are getting enough hype, if they’re below the radar)
“What is it worth? It doesn’t mean anything either way, so if it helps sell tickets give us some more hype.”
(On where Jamel Dean has improved this training camp)
“Catching the front half of the ball instead of the back half. He tried to catch the back half of the ball again today but just his ball skills have improved dramatically from college. That was one of the things we loved about him, his length and turning and batting balls away. He made a great interception the other day and the other one was just too damn easy. It’s just finding it. When you’re running and turning and trying to find the ball, when you’re facing it, it’s a whole lot easier.”

Bucs QB Blaine Gabbert – Photo by: Cliff Welch/PR
(On Blaine Gabbert and Ryan Griffin)
“I’ve got a ton of confidence in Blaine. He won some games for us, some big games, teams that went to the playoffs that year. It’s only the second time he’s been in the same offense in nine years so he’s got that recall, he’s played it full speed for us. Griff has gotten better and better and better. I don’t care who you’re playing with, when you do the things he’s done in two-minute, that’s noteworthy.”
(On the anomaly of being in the league as long as Griffin has without playing)
“That’s the thing, normally when a guy’s been in the same system he can really function with you. Kelly Holcomb wasn’t quite that long but it took him a few years before he got his opportunity and every time he played he threw for 400. Griff is the same kind of guy.”
(On if it hurts Jason Pierre-Paul not being around the team, in meetings, or at practice)
“No because he knows how to rush that passer and that’s all he’s going to do. He’ll know where to line up and I don’t want him getting bumped on the sideline or anything else.”
(On if Arians has talked to him recently and gotten any updates on his practice)
“Yes. Nothing really to tell, progress wise, but I have talked to him.”

(On if he plans on making roster cuts before he’s required, after the fourth preseason game)
“No. We’ll need everybody for that fourth game.”
(On if he generally sits his starters for the fourth preseason game)
“Traditionally I sit them all.”
(On if he envisions both Matt Gay and Cairo Santos kicking in the NFL this year)
“I don’t think there’s any doubt. I don’t think there’s any doubt and the first long field goal this week will go to Cairo.”
