Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times reported on Wednesday that the Bucs’ outside linebacker Shaq Barrett will sign his franchise tag for the 2020 NFL season.

His signing comes on the NFL’s deadline for players to sign their franchise tag, just days after Barrett had confirmed that he would be returning for the upcoming year on the tag.

The signing does however come with one remaining stipulation, a grievance filed with the NFL by Barrett and his agent Drew Rosenhaus to have the edge rusher positionally designated as a defensive end as opposed to a linebacker, the difference of roughly $2 million on the franchise tag.

The 2020 franchise tag for a linebacker would pay $15.828 million, as mentioned by Stroud, while a defensive end designation would pay $17.788 million.

Outside linebacker Matthew Judon, recently tagged by the Baltimore Ravens, ran into a similar hang up when dealing with positional designations and eventually the two sides landed in the middle at $16.808 million for the upcoming season. The Steelers’ Bud Dupree is also going through a similar situation in Pittsburgh.
