Former Bucs wide receiver and current Vikings wide receivers coach Keenan McCardell interviewed for Tampa Bay’s vacant offensive coordinator role on Thursday, the team announced.

McCardell was first reported as a candidate for the job earlier this week and now, on the 20th anniversary of the Bucs’ first-ever Super Bowl victory — a victory in which he scored two touchdowns — he has become the second candidate to interview. He joins Broncos passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach Klint Kubiak, who interviewed with the Bucs on Wednesday.

McCardell has spent the last two seasons as Minnesota’s wide receivers coach, working with 2022 NFL MVP finalist Justin Jefferson — one of the game’s best receivers. Before his time with the Vikings, he spent four seasons with the Jaguars as their wide receivers coach.

The former Bucs receiver, who spent 16 years in the NFL, originally got his start in coaching with Washington before a stint at the University of Maryland, where he coached Stefon Diggs.

While in Washington, McCardell worked under Mike and Kyle Shanahan. He then worked with Doug Marrone in Jacksonville before being hired by Mike Zimmer in Minnesota. He was then retained when Kevin O’Connell, who was a product of the Sean McVay coaching tree, arrived as the Vikings’ new head coach.

In his two seasons with the Bucs (2002-03), McCardell played in 30 games and caught 145 passes for 1,884 yards and 14 touchdowns. His 2003 season saw him catch 84 passes for 1,174 yards and eight touchdowns as he earned one of his two career Pro Bowl selections.
