With Bucs training camp quickly approaching, the PewterReport.com staff asks – and answers – 15 critical camp questions that need to be addressed this August, as Tampa Bay prepares to embark on the 2019 season. Over the next 15 days, PewterReport.com will offer up its thoughts on the topics that the Bucs will need to sort out in order for the team to be successful this season and possibly compete for a long-awaited playoff berth.

These are the storylines the PewterReport.com staff will be following closely in camp, and we invite our readers to share their thoughts as well in the comment section.

Who Starts At Right Guard?

Alex Cappa.

The right guard position for the Buccaneers was a revolving door of below-average play in 2018. Tampa Bay selected Cappa in the third round last season but failed to capture the small school Ali Marpet magic, as the rookie from Humboldt State struggled – to put it mildly.

Tampa Bay ended up platooning Cappa with Caleb Benenoch who struggled as well. The Buccaneers didn’t address the position in the draft – much to the chagrin of many fans – instead choosing to let Cappa battle with free agent addition Earl Watford who played for Bruce Arians in Arizona.

Through the offseason, Cappa got the most first team reps and through the first two days of training camp this year, Cappa appears to be the front runner. Watford, an experienced veteran will push the second-year player, but team sources have told PewterReport.com this year they are pleased with Cappa’s development this offseason.

In a huge season for the organization, particularly for general manager Jason Licht and quarterback Jameis Winston, Tampa Bay is gambling on the development of Cappa combined with better coaching. If Cappa struggles in the preseason and Watford doesn’t fair much better, Tampa Bay could look to make a Logan Mankins type trade entering 2019.
