According to The Athletic’s Greg Auman, the Bucs have waived tight end Codey McElroy. This move comes after the team had already released Tanner Hudson and Jerell Adams, trimming their roster down to just three tight ends. The Bucs began last season with four tight ends on the roster, but a quality depth option did not blossom this summer.
Bucs are waiving tight end Codey McElroy, which means they'll go with only three tight ends on the 53. McElroy will come back on the practice squad if he clears waivers.

McElroy was picked up as an undrafted free agent in 2018, after one season of college football at Southeastern Oklahoma State. He went to camp with the Rams and Cowboys before sticking on the Bucs practice squad in 2019. McElroy appeared in his only NFL game that season, catching one pass for 30 yards. The 28-year old did not participate in any games in 2020.
The release of McElroy means the Bucs will roll with a tight end room of Rob Gronkowski, O.J. Howard and Cam Brate. At least one of Hudson, McElroy or Adams will come back to the practice squad in a day or two. But the Bucs appear comfortable enough with O.J. Howard’s roller coaster training camp to ask him to play a major role right away. And if he falters, Brate, a.k.a. Mr. Reliable, will be there to contribute.
The Bucs must make all cuts official by 4 pm EST on Tuesday. You can track all the team’s roster cuts right here.
