In a long-awaited move, the Bucs and star left tackle Tristan Wirfs have agreed to terms on a contract extension that will keep him in town through 2029. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news early Thursday morning.

The two sides had been in prolonged negotiations over this extension since the offseason began. They have finally come to terms on a five-year, $140.63 million deal that includes $88.24 million guaranteed and makes him the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history. The deal is also the largest in Buccaneer history.

Wirfs is arguably the best player on the team’s roster at this point and was an instant star from the moment Tampa Bay drafted him in the first round of the 2020 draft. Since then, Wirfs quickly established himself as one of the three best right tackles in football, won a Super Bowl, was named a Pro Bowler, was named an All-Pro, made the difficult transition to left tackle and then was named to another Pro Bowl at his new position.

Wirfs has especially excelled in pass protection, where he has recorded pass block efficiency ratings of 98% or above in every year since entering the league, including an absurd 99.3% in 2022 when he allowed just six pressures all season.

Tristan Wirfs’ new contract puts him just ahead of Penei Sewell of the Detroit Lions, who was previously the highest-paid tackle at $28 million per year after signing his own record-setting contract just three months ago.

With Wirfs locked in for the long-term, the Bucs now have four pillars of their offensive line in place for multiple seasons as he joins right tackle Luke Goedeke and right guard Cody Mauch under contract through at least 2025, along with 2024 first-round pick Graham Barton, who is obviously in the first year of a four-year contract that has a fifth-year option.

Inking Wirfs to his much-deserved extension also completes a busy offseason for Jason Licht, Mike Greenberg, Jackie Davidson and the Bucs, as they agreed to new deals with a host of their own, including quarterback Baker Mayfield, wide receiver Mike Evans, linebacker Lavonte David, kicker Chase McLaughlin, All-Pro safety Antoine Winfield Jr. and now Wirfs.

Licht famously said back at the NFL Combine that if he could get each of these players signed this offseason, it would warrant another boat parade akin to the one the team had when it won Super Bowl LV in February of 2021.

“We’re focused on signing ours right now,” Licht said. “I mean, if we can re-sign Mike, Baker, Lavonte, Chase, Antoine and Tristan, we should be throwing another boat parade. That’s a pretty good class there.”

Well, thanks to the big news for Wirfs on Thursday morning, it may be time to get the boat parade plans in motion.

This deal is also significant for Tampa Bay in that it once again highlighted just how exceptional its first two picks of the 2020 Draft were. First, it Winfield — the team’s second-round pick in 2020 — becoming the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL. And on Thursday, Wirfs — the Bucs’ 2020 first-rounder — became the highest-paid offensive lineman in the league. The two make up quite the duo and serve as two franchise cornerstones that the team will continue to build around for the foreseeable future. Winfield is set to turn just 26 years old this month, while Wirfs only turned 25 in January.

Both Winfield and Wirfs are on a Buccaneers Ring of Honor-type trajectory, and Tampa Bay fans can now look forward to more years of both guys leading the way on their respective sides of the ball.
