On June 24, 2021, tears poured from the eyes of Bucs fans across the country and around the world. Happy tears. Because it was on this day, that the NFL laid forth a memo to the inboxes of every franchise – a memo that would change the world. According ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the NFL announced that each team will be permitted to use two helmets. This rule change will allow teams to pair the second helmet with an alternate or throwback (read: creamsicle) jersey.
Which means that the creamsicle jerseys – the league’s greatest uniform – are officially BACK.
The only catch? The rule won’t go into effect until the 2022 season. Pain.
NFL approved alternate helmets today for teams wearing throwback uniforms starting in 2022, per league sources. This opens the door to the defending world-champion Bucs wearing the old white helmets with the orange swashbuckling Buccaneer as early as 2022.

Still, this is a great day in Bucs history. We now know that the Bucs creamsicle jerseys, a huge fan favorite, are not dead. They will be donned again, and it is highly likely that Tom Brady will get to play a game in the orange, red and white next season. That’s an interest Brady has publicly expressed on social media since joining the Bucs.

The one helmet rule was originally issued with player safety in mind. Now all players will have an alternate helmet of the same size, make and model of their normal helmet. This should uphold player safety while also opening the door for the return of throwback jerseys. It’ll be the first time the Bucs have worn the creamsicle jerseys since Week 7 of the 2012 season.
If the Bucs can find a way to win it all this season, then get the creamsicles for 2022? We could be looking at a potential 3-peat here, folks. Get hyped for the creamsicle jerseys.
