In addition to the firing of offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, more changes are coming to the Bucs’ coaching staff

As Pewter Report reported early on Tuesday morning, the Bucs fired several assistant coaches on the offensive side of the ball and a defensive coach as well. Thursday is the day that these moves are culminating.

Pewter Report can confirm the reports first made by Rick Stroud that the Bucs have fired wide receivers coach Kevin Garver, while quarterbacks coach Clyde Christensen has retired. Stroud also reported that the Bucs have parted ways with running backs coach Todd McNair.

Tampa Bay’s offense regressed in 2022, averaging just 18.4 points per game, which ranked 25th in the league, after averaging 30 points per game the previous two seasons. The Bucs running game ground to a halt this year, ranking dead last in the league at 75.6 yards per game.

Defensively, although Tampa Bay improved their total yards per game from 331.5 in 2021 to 324.4 in 2022, they drastically dropped their run game performance. Teams used to be lucky to run it on the Bucs, allowing 92.5 yards per game last season, but they plummeted all the way up to 120.7 yards per game this year. Tampa Bay also saw a slight increase in points per game as well.

Statement From Todd Bowles

Head coach Todd Bowles made a statement about all of the personnel changes that the Bucs posted their website and social media.

“We appreciate the hard work and contributions that all of these coaches made to our successes over the past four seasons,” Bowles said.

“As a collective group, we did not meet the high standards that had been set for this past year and my focus now is on doing what is needed to ensure a successful 2023 season. These were very difficult decisions but something that I felt was necessary for our football team going forward.”

Bucs Coaches That Remained On

Notable coaches that are still on the staff include assistant coach and run game coordinator Harold Goodwin, offensive line coach Joe Gilbert and special teams coordinator Keith Armstrong. Many changes could still be made and the roles of Goodwin and Gilbert could be determined by who is the new offensive coordinator.

PewterReport.com will continuously monitor all the coaching moves and update the story as the situation unfolds.
