There are few things better than when the Bucs offense goes on the attack. That was the case on Sunday against the Falcons, when Tampa Bay took their opening possession 75 yards in 13 plays for a 7-0 lead. The Bucs didn’t run the ball once on the drive, as Tom Brady went 11-13 passing for 75 yards and a touchdown. Speaking on Bucs Total Access this week, Arians explained their offensive approach.

“We wanted to stay on the attack,” Arians said. “But the way they were playing [resulted in more pass plays]. We have a lot of dual calls, runs and passes. Tom puts us in the best play. And they were giving us what we were looking for in the passing game. He wasn’t getting touched. So just keep throwing it.”

The Bucs biggest gains on the drive were a pair of 15-yarders, one to Leonard Fournette and the other to Mike Evans. Brady spread the ball around to just three different receivers on the drive, finding Chris Godwin five times. Fournette capped the drive with a great one-handed catch in the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown. Brady got the ball out pretty quickly all drive, and his receivers produced after the catch.

“Those quick screens and stuff, they’re just outside running plays for us,” Arians said. “They’re just a long handoff. So yeah that’s an extension of the running game. Sometimes there were runs called and we throw it out to Mike or somebody, and it’s a better play. So just take what the defense is giving you.”

The Bucs ended up with 51 pass attempts to 16 runs and one kneel-down on Sunday. On the 15 carries by running backs, the Bucs really struggled. Leonard Fournette managed 44 yards on 13 carries, while Ronald Jones and Gio Bernard carried once apiece for a combined five yards. They’ll need to improve quickly with the Bills coming to town on Sunday.
