Bucs head coach Bruce Arians has seen the rumors and “reports”, and he’s tired of it. In a terrific interview with the Tampa Bay Times’ Rick Stroud, Arians blasted a recent tweet thread from radio host Rich Ohrnberger. The thread and subsequent on-air appearance by Ohrnberger said the relationship between Bucs quarterback Tom Brady and Arians had soured. Ohrnberger accused Arians of “undermining” offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich and Brady by eliminating sections of the game plan late in the week.

There have been whispers and rumors of dissension between Brady and Arians, but no actual reports. Much of the smoke has come from Boston media, who have been skeptical of the relationship since before it started. Stroud reached out to Arians following Ohrnberger’s tweets, causing the head coach to slam the reports.

“It seems like there’s one (story) every day now,’’ Arians told Stroud. “Everybody is speculating he’s going somewhere else. That don’t bother me. This other bulls**t, the relationship thing. That’s so far-fetched.”

Arians was perhaps most angry about the implication from Ohrnberger that he would overrule Leftwich and Brady’s work. Considering the head coach has tangibly surrendered control of the offense to both of them, that would be strange.

“I mean, that’s such bulls**t,” Arians said. “That’s what pisses me off. I guess probably Byron could corroborate this, too. First of all, I don’t rehab my Achilles in the morning. I will go over the game plans and add things, but I don’t delete anything. I don’t have to because they do such a good job. I’ll see some things. Add some things. It’s an awesome collaboration, one of the best I’ve ever been around.’’

Arians had other comments too, including scoffing at the idea he takes a “red pen” to the game plan. The former Coach of the Year said he’s “never heard of that one”. You can read the entire story here.

Ohrnberger Defends His Claim

Ohrnberger defended his stance in a reply tweet thread to Stroud.

In the thread, the former NFL player suggested there were disagreements between Brady and Leftwich too. It’s unclear if Ohrnberger misspoke or not when typing that part. The rest of his “report” does not indicate tension between those two. The most laughable part of Ohrnberger’s comments is suggesting that Brady “successfully seized control of the offensive game plan”. That’s just not how any of this works.
Ohrnberger has come under fire recently because of a false report regarding Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes. On Friday, Ohrnberger tweeted that Mahomes asked his wife and brother to no longer attend his games because it was bad for his brand. That report, also laughable on the surface, was refuted by numerous actual reporters, and by Mahomes himself. Ohrnberger later retracted his report, which was tweeted right after his thread about Arians.
“I can’t substantiate the information that I tweeted out earlier today regarding Patrick Mahomes and his family,” Ohrnberger said, via Chron.com. “The source I received this information from was posing as someone I trust. I will delete this tweet later today along with the original thread. Please pass this along.”
As I wrote this past week, the burden of proof is on those suggesting Brady was unhappy in Tampa Bay. All he’s ever indicated is significant respect and admiration for the Bucs coaching staff. In fact, Brady has been especially effusive in his praise of Leftwich, and pointedly praised Arians in his retirement post.
There’s also no on-field reason for discontent. After all, the Bucs offense ranked at the top of the league in both seasons with Brady under center. The future Hall of Fame quarterback enjoyed two of his best campaigns, with many believing he should have won MVP this year. If not for several significant injuries, the Bucs had a strong chance of at least representing the NFC in the Super Bowl again this year.
