The Bucs’ wide receiver room has been hit with quite a few injuries over the last two weeks of training camp. Breshad Perriman is out with an undisclosed injury and hasn’t practiced since Aug. 1. Mike Evans suffered a hamstring injury on Aug. 5 and has yet to return to practice. Now, the latest receiver to suffer an injury was Russell Gage. Gage pulled up during Wednesday’s joint practice with the Dolphins and did not return.
Gage didn’t practice Thursday, instead spending practice talking on the sideline with Evans, Perriman and Julio Jones. Pewter Report caught up with head coach Todd Bowles after practice, who revealed Gage has a tweaked hamstring.
“He tweaked a hamstring,” Bowles said. ” Right now, like the rest of them, he’s day-to-day. We want to have him ready for the opener and not worry about right now in the short area.”
#GoBucs Head Coach Todd Bowles says WR Russell Gage just tweaked his hamstring on Wednesday and is day-to-day. Says there is no rush as they want to have him ready for the opener and they’re not really worried about it in the short area.

The news of it being just a tweaked hamstring, as expected, is a positive for the Bucs. With Evans sidelined and Chris Godwin working his way back into shape, they are now down three of their top four wide receivers. Gage’s absence will only give more opportunities to the rest of the receivers on the depth chart, who are vying for the final two or three spots on the roster.
“We’re not rushing them,” Bowles said. “We’ve got a lot of guys we need to see as well. Not that you want them hurt, but they’ll be back for the opener.”
Don’t expect Gage or Evans to return any time soon, as Bowles isn’t going to rush them with so many other guys needing reps. While it’s unfortunate for both players, Tom Brady missing the next 10 days also means it makes even less sense to hurry them back to practice. Instead, it’ll be about getting everyone ready to go for the Sept. 11 opener against Dallas.
