On the heels of hiring offensive coordinator Dave Canales and receivers coach Brad Idzik, the Bucs have hired a new running backs coach as Todd Bowles continues to fill out his staff. Skip Peete, who was Dallas’ running backs coach from 2020-22, replaced Todd McNair, who was fired along with offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich and several other assistants on Jan. 19.
NFL Network’s Jane Slater broke the news on Twitter.
Former #Cowboys RB Coach Skip Peete tells me he is headed to the Tampa Bay Bucs in the same role. Peete notably coached a trio of backs in Ezekiel Elliott, Tony Pollard and Malik Davis who all finished the year without any fumbles and is credited with Pollard’s development.

Dallas has had one of the better rushing attacks in the league with Tony Pollard (1,007 yards) and Ezekiel Elliott (856 yards) combining for over 1,800 yards and 21 touchdowns last year. And as Slater points out – zero fumbles.
Despite that level of success, Peete’s contract was not renewed in Dallas. Peete spent the last three years in Dallas with Tampa Bay’s new outside linebackers coach George Edwards.
A number of coaches w expiring contracts weren’t renewed. Shocking given the success of the running back room but happy for him and his family and his new team

The 60-year old Skip Peete brings a wealth of experience to Bowles’ coaching staff, as he has coached running backs dating back to Oakland in 1998. Peete coached the Raiders running backs until 2006 before joining the Cowboys to coach running backs from 2007-12. Then, Peete had a two-year stint with the Bears (2013-14) and three years with the Rams (2016-19) before landing in Dallas again.
Peete’s brother, Rodney Peete, was a former NFL quarterback and a sixth-round pick of the Detroit Lions. He played for Dallas (1994), Philadelphia (1995-98), Washington (1999), Oakland (2000-01) and Carolina (2002-04). Peete’s father, Willie Peete, coached running backs in Kansas City (1983-86), Green Bay (1987-91), Tampa Bay (1992-94) and Chicago (1994-97).
