After learning late last week that the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were moving on from defensive line coach Jay Hayes, the question then became who would be the one to replace him, especially since the move happened so late in the process?
Soon after Hayes’ dismissal we learned that the Bucs assistant defensive line coach Paul Spicer interview for the position, and now, according to a report from Rick Stroud of the Tampa Bay Times, we’ve learned of another candidate, Ted Monachino, former defensive coordinator for the Colts, has also interviewed for the position.
Former Colts defensive coordinator Ted Monachino interviewed with the #Bucs for their defensive line coaching position Wednesday. No word on if he was offered the job or whether the team will interview more candidates to replace Jay Hayes, who was fired last week

Monachino has been in the NFL as a defensive assistant coach since 2001. He started his NFL coaching career as a defensive line coach for the Arizona Cardinals from 2001-2005, and was then the defensive line coach under Mike Smith when he and Dirk Koetter were both in Jacksonville with the Jaguars. After that he went on to be the linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens from 2010-2015 where he won a Super Bowl. He has been the defensive coordinator for the Colts for the last two years.
The connection with Koetter and Smith is obvious from their time with Monachino in Jacksonville. Though the Bucs were ranked last in terms of pass rush in 2016, Monachino’s Colts were ranked just one spot ahead of them at second to last. However, his success and longevity in the league go beyond last year’s poor sack results with a depleted Colts defense.
There has been no word on whether or not Monachino was offered the job after his interview.
