For the first time since a win the Cleveland Browns, Dirk Koetter and the Bucs walked off the field with a victory. At the forefront for the win was a game where the Bucs had no turnovers, and forced two of their own takeaways defensively. It was the first game where the Bucs didn’t have a turnover since Week 1 at New Orleans. After the 27-9 final over the 49ers, a jovial Dirk Koetter took to the podium to address questions about the game.
(On if this game was a complete effort)
“Yeah, it really was, that’s what I told the guys. Shoot, we made all of our kicks, we got two takeaways and we didn’t turn the ball over. Man, life is good.”
(On what it took for Jameis Winston to have such a clean game with no turnovers)
“Well I’m not sure what it took, but he did it, that’s really all that matters is that he did it. Jameis played quarterback the way you really need to play it in the NFL until you get into desperation time, which we never did today. So, Jameis wasn’t perfect but he played a damn good game, I’m proud of him. It’s been a difficult road, he’s seen what that looks like, he needs to consistently play like that, and he can be one of the best.”
(On how big a turnaround it was to get a goal line stand in the third quarter and follow it up with a touchdown)
“That third quarter, they had the ball, they had deferred, and we held them on those first two plays, then we had that penalty on the third down and they took the ball all the way down to the one, so I thought that was a huge turning point in the game. It’s hard to stop a team three times from the one yard line, and that was great, then we were able to take that thing down. Jameis made a beautiful scramble play on the one to Mike (Evans), that was just a methodical type game. In the NFL, part of winning is not losing, not beating yourself.”
(On why he thought Vita Vea played so well today)
“I think Jason Licht had a secret talk with him. You have to ask Jason what exactly he said, I told Jason I’d give him a complete list of guys to talk to next week.”
(On how different this team is when they have a lead early in the game)
“Right there at the end, that was good example of that, where you can basically play a loose coverage zone defense, let them throw the ball in front and come up, we can still tackle better than we did at the end. I mean, still, when you’re up three scores and there’s three and a half minutes left, and you’re just making tackles and they’re not making plays. Playing with a lead is huge in this league, and we really haven’t done that all season, I think this is the first game since the opener against New Orleans where we won the turnover battle, so, it’s good football and we played it for four quarters today.”
(On getting the defensive pressure on the quarterback today)
“Yeah, I thought that was really big in that first half. We told them at halftime, if we could just maintain that, because we hit him a lot more times then the four sacks that will show up on the sheet. We hit him a lot, and that’s going to wear on the guy for sure.”
(On if he rubbed his eyes when he saw the interception by the Bucs defense)
“Hallelujah, hallelujah, the turnover streak is over, or the lack of takeaways. But then when they didn’t call him out of bounds right away and he got up and started running, I wanted to cut his head off after that.”
(On Mike Evans long pass play)
“That was just a third down play, and we had a three man combination on one side, and Mike on a single, on a go route. It actually looked a lot like that one a couple years ago against Seattle when he beat him (Richard Sherman) on the other side of the field, he beat him clean off the line and Jameis put it on the money.”
(On what a relief it was to walk off with a win)
“Well, that’s the object, that’s the object of the game is to win. All we can do is hang in there, that’s all you can do, you got to keep coming to work. Hats off to all the guys in that room right there, all the players for hanging with it, and continuing to battle. You can’t play that would of, could of, should of game, because you can’t bring it back. One they’re gone, they’re gone, and you got to play the one you’re playing and then get ready for the next one. So, I’m proud of the guys today, proud of the coaches for the game plan they put together, and especially proud of the players for the way they’ve played.”
(On if he’s proud of the players for continuing to stay motivated)
“Oh sure, yeah, absolutely. These guys are pro’s, that’s what they do for a living and they’re proud of that, that’s how they make their money.”
(On if a game like Jameis had today could help him moving forward with the style of play)
“Well, every game is a little different. You’re going to get the chance to ask him when he comes in here, so that’d be question better for him then me.”
