Following the Bucs loss to the Tennessee Titans this past Sunday, Tampa Bay has moved to 2-5 on the season on the heels of a three-game losing streak. To make matters worse, quarterback Jameis Winston has compiled 10 total turnovers between seven interceptions and three lost fumbles over the past two games.

Winston, the Bucs’ rocky start to the season and what the offense can do to improve were key topics when offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich stepped up to the podium at One Buc Place on Thursday. Below is the full transcript from his press conference.

(On the slow turnaround for Tampa Bay under Bruce Arians)
“You just keep coaching them. You just keep coaching them, we’re getting better. Our record may not say that but we’re getting better, we just have to make sure we keep coaching them. We’re not out of this thing, that’s our approach to it. We’re going to keep coaching these guys, they’re going to continue getting better, we had a hell of a practice today and guys are still into it so we’re going to just keep coaching them and keep getting better.”

(On where the offense has gotten better)
“As a whole, from the time we got here to what we see right now, I see as a whole. The numbers may not say that right now, we’ll add the numbers up at the end of the year and we’ll see, it’s way too early for that, but I see this crew getting better every day.”

(On the problem with the option routes)
“The newness of everything. It was uncharacteristic of the two guys and the situations they were in. It was very unusual for that to happen, it happened and it happened in the game, usually those things happen during practice and you get it corrected but it didn’t, it happened in the game. We’ll learn from it, we’ll move on, we’ll go on to the Seattle Seahawks.”

(On the decline in effectiveness of the run game)
“It all depends on the game. The last two games, before this past game, we didn’t have a chance to have a lot of rushing attempts, if you watched those games. That’s where the numbers can be skewed a little bit. It all depends how you look at it and if you understand the scenarios in the game you’ll understand why it’s been down but we’ll get better at it all.”

(On if his opinion of Jameis Winston as a franchise quarterback has changed)
“I feel as though we’re playing… We’re just not doing enough to win football games. This league is so.. there’s four or five plays here and there that you need to really change and get out of our system, as a team really, and that comes down to winning the football games and if you win some of those games that you lost the narrative is all different, but we didn’t. So we’ve got to understand that, fix those plays and make sure that when we have those opportunities in the future we make those plays.”

(On beating themselves with simple mistakes)
“Yeah and that’s what we have to be aware of. We have to be aware of those things and unfortunately they showed up in games, they’ve shown up in games when they haven’t shown up in practice. We have to correct it, we’ve got to stay on it, stay on it, stay on it and have an understanding that those plays can’t happen on Sunday because you’re wasting plays, let alone the turnovers that may come from those plays or the negative plays that may come from those plays. You’ve got to find a way to get those plays out of our game and we will, I really believe that we’ll get those plays out of our system and we’ll start trying to find ways to win football games.”

(On Seattle’s defense)
“They’ve always been a very good defense. I’ve had an opportunity to go up there every year that I’ve coached. It’s a very fun place to play, it’s a very loud place to play, the guys won’t need a lot to get juiced up, it’s an exciting place to play, one of my favorite places to play. I love the atmosphere there. It smells, it looks like, everything about it says football. It’s a good place to play, it’s always a good atmosphere, it’s always a tough place to play as an opponent because of how loud it relly is. You can’t simulate it until you actually get there so we’re going to prepare for it, make sure oiur communication is right and we’re going to see if we can go up there and play well.”

(On the end of the road trip)
“I don’t know if they’re thinking about it but I know I don’t have time to think about it, I have the opponent. You don’t really care about where the game is at, you look at the opponent and let the tape tell you. When you’re worried about the opponent so much the location really doesn’t matter. You try to get these guys prepared, for the guys who have never been there, never played there, to have an understanding of what that atmosphere’s going to be like.”

(On the veterans making mental mistakes)
“Well veterans make mistakes too, every Sunday. Every Sunday they’re makinh mistakes and you have to correct them. That’s around the league. We’ll clean this stuff up, we’ll clean those plays up and get them out of our system and when we do I believe we’ll play well.”

(On the anger about losing from the players)
“They feel close. It’s tough winning and losing in this league week in and week out. It’s hard to explain, if you give it all in the week and give it all on Sunday and you lose the game, that’s tough on everybody. People have no understanding of what that’s really like, when you give it all every week. You win the game, the joy that comes from winning that game, regardless of how you win it. When you lose the game, the defeat that stays on you when you lose the game. I don’t think a lot of people have an understanding of what guys put themselves through from a mental and physical standpoint, week in and week out. That’s what makes it difficult so you try to do the things throughout the week to make sure that, for at least 24 hours, you get that good feeling of winning the game.”

(As a quarterback on fourth-and-short if he liked handing the ball off)
“I’ve done both. [I prefer] whichever one got what we needed. I’ve done a lot of throwing the ball there and didn’t hit the guy and you get the same feeling. It’s about execution, whatever play is called, finding a way to get the job done. That’s what it’s all about when you play quarterback. You just want to find a way to get the job done and we didn’t so hopefully if we get that opportunity again we’ll find a way to get the job done.”

(On the lack of production behind Mike Evans and Chris Godwin at receiver)
“I don’t really see it that way. When you have guys going off the way that these guys are going off it’s difficult. I think we’ve had four or five games when you have a guy almost have 200 yards, between Chris and Mike, and when you have that sometimes the ball doesn’t go that way because it may go to a guy more than usual. We have a lot of guys out there that’s getting in position to make plays and I tell you guys this, sometimes the ball doesn’t get into guys’ hands because of the way teams are playing us, progressions in plays, maybe leakage in protection where guys are open and you can’t get the ball to them, it’s a lot. It’s football, it’s the game of football. We’ll try to continue getting our guys going, not just the third and fourth wide receivers but everybody.”

(On if he has to keep guys bought in)
“I see the improvements. Maybe you guys don’t but I see the improvements. I see the work that these guys are putting in to win football games because ultimately we’re trying to win football games. We’re not trying to be better statistically at this just so the world can say this, we’re trying to leave a stadium with a win so whatever that is that we have to do, we’ve got to find ways to do that. That’s our only mindset.
