The Bucs trimmed their roster down from 90 to 85 on Tuesday after releasing six players. The NFL had a deadline by 4 PM on Tuesday so there were moves that were coming.
Tampa Bay waived tight end Ben Beise, offensive lineman Curtis Blackwell and wide receiver Kameron Brown. They also waived outside linebacker JoJo Ozougwu and offensive lineman Jonathan Hubbard with an injury designation.
In probably the most surprising move, the Bucs released defensive back Ross Cockrell, who has been with the Bucs for the last two seasons, including their Super Bowl winning team.
Cockrell played in 29 games with six starts, recording 54 tackles, one tackle for loss, eight pass breakups and one forced fumble.
Ozouwgu, Beise, Blackwell and Brown were all undrafted free agents. The three offensive players just fell behind on the depth chart at their respective positions. Brown in particular was having a solid training camp, but the competition is so tough at receiver this season that it made it that much more difficult to make the roster.
In the case of Ozouwgu, he just wasn’t able to stay healthy and showcase what he can do. Same goes for Hubbard, who was going into his second NFL season here.
With six players off the team, put the Bucs at 84, but the recent signing of Carl Nassib bumps it back up to 85 players.
