Below are the questions we chose for this week’s edition of the PR Bucs Monday Mailbag.

Question: Is it possible that Jameis Winston has been over-coached, which has led him to question himself so much that he’s turned into a pedestrian QB?

Answer: Going back to training camp it is something I have considered and wondered about. Not so much as getting too much coaching as far as a workload goes, but having three different voices in Jameis Winston’s ear with head coach Bruce Arians, offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich and QBs coach Clyde Christensen all involved.

Is that affecting Winston at all? I don’t think anyone but Winston can answer that, but if all three voices are preaching the same thing, then it shouldn’t matter. And with Arians’ history and success, I tend to trust his process and if he thought it was detrimental to Winston, then he would change things.

I do think it is possible that the outside noise from fans and media could be affecting his play somewhat. Combine that with the pressure knowing he is playing for a potential huge payday in 2020 and maybe all of that has made him overthink things too much. All Winston hears is “don’t turn the ball over, don’t make mistakes” and sometimes that backfires. Is he holding the ball too long because he is worried about throwing an interception and in turn gets sacked?

If I am Winston I am tuning out everyone but the coaches, and playing football with his instincts and what made him a national champion at Florida State and what won him a Heisman Trophy. “Grip it and rip it,” as they say. Worrying about mechanics, footwork, arm position, ball trajectory and all of the other nuances, while important to a degree, aren’t the things that made Winston the overall No. 1 pick in 2015. Winston needs to bet on Winston, and at the end of the year it will either be good enough or it won’t.

Question: Hey Mark, my question is out of the Bucs’ issues – O-line, D-line, secondary, QB – which positions deserve to be drafted with a first-round pick for the Bucs?

Answer: Unless the Bucs decide to turn the page on Winston, or end up with a Top 5 draft pick – or better – I would prefer this team to address the offensive line heavily. If Winston does earn the right to stay in Tampa Bay then I would go with the offensive line the way they have the secondary the last couple of years. Find the right five guys, and even if you think Donovan Smith, Ali Marpet, Ryan Jensen and Alex Cappa are four of the five right guys for the future, this team needs a new right tackle and also a lot more depth.

Winston has been sacked 25 times through six games, which is second-most in the league, and while he can be blamed for some of those sacks, that doesn’t factor in the number of hits Winston takes. Those add up. Smith might have a game where he doesn’t give up a sack and on paper you pat him on the back, but if Winston or whoever the quarterback is, takes three or four hits from his blindside, you are eventually going to see a problem.

After right tackle, Tampa Bay might need to go draft more secondary players. I know fans are tired of seeing corners and safeties drafted, but the Bucs can’t just give up because the team has invested draft capital in the past at the position. It’s important to keep swinging until you hit a homer or at the very least a couple doubles. Right now the Bucs have hit a single or two, but haven’t knocked one out of the park when it comes to drafting defensive backs.

Question: What would we be saying if kick against Giants was good and Bucs were 3-3?

Answer: Everyone would be feeling a little better, but it wouldn’t mask significant issues this team still has. You can spray all the air freshener in the world, but the odor you are trying to cover up will eventually return until it is addressed. And there are odors on this team. Two weeks ago in London the quarterback turning the ball over six times was one of those, as was an offensive line that surrendered seven sacks.

Most teams have weak links, some just don’t get as exposed as the ones the Bucs have had. Good teams hide them better than bad teams, but in the case of the Buccaneers, there was no way to hide seven turnovers last week, or a secondary that has given up the most passing yards in the NFL this season, or an offensive line plagued by injuries and inconsistency.

Question: What changes do you expect to see coming out of the bye week?

Answer: We know there will be a new punt returner after the release of Bobo Wilson, and most likely T.J. Logan gets the first crack at it. Tampa Bay did work out some return guys last week but Logan is most likely the team’s first choice to replace Wilson. Scotty Miller and Vernon Hargreaves III are also in the running.

Other personnel changes could see Tampa Bay give rookie cornerback Jamel Dean more snaps and reps, perhaps even starting. That could push Hargreaves to the nickel position and that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. He may be an upgrade over M.J. Stewart or rookie Sean Murphy-Bunting. These are all speculative moves at this point and we will know more once the team returns to practice on Tuesday.

Lastly, maybe we see a more simplified defensive game plan next Sunday at Tennessee. While the Bucs have been outstanding against the run (No. 1 in the league) we all know how bad the secondary has played (the No. 32 against the pass). And when asked about the issues, the answer from the staff has often been communication problems. I am not sure how complex the scheme they are asking the defensive backs to run is, but if there are constant breakdowns it comes down to two things – the system is too difficult for the young players – or the players aren’t smart enough to grasp it.
