Bucs cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting had plenty of peaks and valleys during the 2020 season. Of course, the peak was winning Super Bowl LV, the icing on top being that Murphy-Bunting had three interceptions in four playoff games.
What made it even sweeter were the obstacles that Murphy-Bunting had to overcome to stay on the field for all 20 games.
Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, Murphy-Bunting went into detail about the injuries he dealt with during the season. It began as early as Week 2, when he pulled his groin in the Bucs’ first victory of the year over the Carolina Panthers.
Murphy-Bunting’s pulled groin led to a sprained left ankle that lingered throughout the season. As if things could get any worse, Murphy-Bunting then dislocated both of his thumbs during the season, yet stayed on the field.
If that wasn’t enough, the Bucs’ corner then rolled his ankle in the playoffs, in-between his three hero-moment interceptions. It all paid off, though, as he ended the season as a Super Bowl champion.
Murphy-Bunting finished the season having played 83 percent of the team’s defensive snaps. He was one of the most victimized cornerbacks in the league throughout the season, but finished the year with an interception and three pass breakups. Murphy-Bunting recorded 70 tackles from the cornerback position, good enough for fifth on the team.
