On Wednesday, the Bucs announced they have opened the 21-day practice window for cornerback Richard Sherman and wide receiver Justin Watson. Sherman is currently on injured reserve, while Watson remains on the PUP list. Over the next three weeks, the Bucs will assess their ability to return to the roster. If neither player can be cleared in that timeframe, they will revert to season-ending injured reserve.

Sherman started two games for the Bucs before bowing out with an injury in Week 6. When the cornerback returned to action, he didn’t last long. Sherman injured his calf in pregame warmups, which landed him on injured reserve. The 10-year veteran could return this week against Buffalo as a backup option. Head coach Bruce Arians has indicated that the Bucs will cross-train Sherman at safety too.
As for Watson, he hasn’t played this entire season. The Bucs fourth-year receiver had knee surgery back in the summer, which put him on the Physically Unable to Perform list to open training camp. There’s been no update on Watson until Monday, when Arians suggested his return this season was unlikely. Two days later, Watson’s 21-day practice window has been opened.
“Justin Watson, I doubt it,” Arians said on Monday when asked about a potential return. “A lot of injuries would have to happen.”
Currently, the Bucs are only without Antonio Brown at wide receiver. The veteran pass-catcher is recovering from a sprained ankle, but is also suspended until Week 16. The Bucs are currently carrying six wide receivers on the active roster in Mike Evans Chris Godwin, Scotty Miller, Tyler Johnson, Breshad Perriman and Jaelon Darden. Don’t expect to see Watson activated anytime soon.
